Selling Us Tickets to Non-Existent Games

Written by Chris on .

I, like many of you, am Michigan transplant.  Today I find myself in Columbus,OH, which I like to describe as a great city in a terrible state.  It's not Michigan, but it's not bad.  And at least it has hockey, even if it is the Blue Jackets.

So with the lockout, one of the few things to do in town is now out of the picture.  But someone forgot to tell the Jackets, as I received a phone call today from their ticket sales office trying to get my to buy tickets.

You got to be f'ing kidding me.

Now, the guy was very nice, as I was back to him.  He's just doing his job and the Jackets need money.  I get that.

But what a kick to the balls.  Trying to sell me a product that not only sucks, but they won't even provide.  Talk about the owners not really getting it.  For whatever reason, this pissed me off more than anything else so far.  Just proof that the owners think that the fans are going to come back, not matter how many times they kick us when we're down.

Hit the jump for more on the NHL trying to use us to win the PR battle:

Hell, they're even using a GOP strategist to lie to us to make themselves sound better.  From a great Deadspin article:

You're going to hear a lot about "shared sacrifice" from the NHL in the days and weeks to come. That's the word from inside a secret emergency PR focus group, in which a top Republican Party strategist tested pro-ownership messages on a captive audience of hockey fans.

Shared sacrifice my ass.  The NHL needs to realize that the only sacrifice that I care about is their sacrifice of my hockey dollars.  As in you aren't getting any.

Seriously, check out the article for mountains of BS that the NHL is ready to serve us.

A mountain of BS, just like the Jackets trying to offer my tickets to games that they won't put on.  I don't know if Detroit is doing this.  I sure as hell hope not.

Let us know if anyone else has gotten a call from a team.  I want to hear what teams have the balls to do this.

My friend was allowed to purchase - and pay for - Thrashers season tickets HOURS before they were sold to True North up in Winnipeg.  Gutless.

This exact same thing happened to me, a Michigan transplant in Phoenix. Luckily the guy calling was nice and didn't try to pressure me when I said I'd wait until the lockout is over to see if I wanted to buy tickets.

I freaking hate Deadspin.  All those Gawker sites are garbage.  Luntz is simply getting paid to run focus groups.  Is he finding out what we as fans already know? Sure.  What we should be pissed about is the fact that the owners feel like they have to hire a PR guy to figure out what fans want.  Just goes to show how tone deaf they really are. Luntz does a good job in his studies.  This was probably his easiest job ever.  "Hey Frank, what do the fans say when seeing our PR message?"- owners  "Um, they're pissed guys. You're losing them faster than last time." - Luntz

Dude, I know he's a GOP staffer and everyone is touchy about that subject these days but that was certainly an interesting article.  No reason for the hate for Deadspin, that's good reporting that I'm glad they did it.  It's sad that the NHL is preparing their statements for PR rather than really getting down and dirty.  We already have both parties lying to us with pretty words, now the NHL joins the fray.  I'm sure the PA does the same thing.  The point is is that should be spent getting to the table, not trying to win some fucked up PR war.  BTW, I can't stand Gawker or Gizmodo (and whatever that man-hating blog is, Jezabel?), but Deadspin is pretty awesome.  Sure some of it is trash, but things like the weekly "Fun Bag" and some of the articles they have from the players are better than anything ESPN produces.

@moorecha Oh, I won't dispute that they did a good job or don't have good stories.  I've simply soured on their agenda they seem to always be pushing.  That's why I don't frequent Jalopnik or Gizmodo anymore.  They just don't have the same standards for their work across the line.  Having dealt with Gawker workers and hireups, I wouldn't put much trust in them.  Now, that doesn't mean that it's not a good story... just that I can't stand Gawker, their agenda, or their self righteous writers who'll do just about anyone to build someone up or tear someone down.  THAT is what kills me.
