Well...it's time for the traditional Free Agent Open post. I'll keep this thing running with all the updates as often as I can.
We kick it off with a doozy...
Can confirm what has been reported, Daniel Alfredsson will sign 1-year deal with Red Wings after noon.
Updated: 11:53 AM via Red Wings Front:
The signing means that Daniel Cleary is likely not returning.
Cleary was apparently looking for $3 million per year. Kind of sad...I'm a sentimental guy.
Updated 12:08 PM:
Damien Brunner and Craig Adams both hitting UFA market
Updated 12:10 PM:
#RedWings' negotiations with Valtteri Filppula revealed he believes he's no. 1 center, should be paid as such.
Seriously, Val? Are you telling us that the reason you had such a lousy season last year is because your on the 2nd Line? Who else in the WORLD thinks that Val is a bonified #1 Center?
Updated 12:19 PM
Alfredsson paperwork being finalized with Detroit. 1-year, $5.5M contract.
I'm surprised at that figure...seems a bit high...or does it?
Updated 12:25 PM
Red Wings announce Daniel Alfredsson's deal. One year at $5.5-million cap hit. Lot of bonuses to get to that number though.
Details will come later.
Here they are:
Cap hit on new
#RedWings forward Daniel Alfredsson is $3.5 million, with bonuses can reach $5.5 million.
Updated 12:25 PM
#RedWings are working on deal with C Stephen Weiss.
Updated 12:48 PM
Wings are trying to work out a deal now with Stephen Weiss, who has been their primary target to fill second-line center spot.
Good choice of words "Fill second line center spot."

Stephen Weiss Career Stats: 654 GP - 145 G - 249 A - 394 PTS - 313 PIM
...apparently, Val was erased from NHL.com - are they trying to tell us something?
Updated at 1:11 PM
TSN reporting that Weiss is "leaning towards"
Looks like we're closing in.

Found Val's career stats:
483 GP - 100 G - 151 A - 251 P - 158 PIM
Updated 1:18 PM
Jim Nill said nothing imminent in free agency. Stars not in on Dan Cleary.
Updated 1:25 PM
Wings think they'll get Weiss, but are concerned Blues might outbid them in the end.
Twitter folks seem to say Grabovski if Weiss comes off of the table. With a better points-per-game average for Weiss vs Val...this war between Detroit and St. Louis could make or break Val's stance on his self-worth.
Updated 1:50 PM
DET closing in on Stephen Weiss.
I'm getting a lot of mixed feedback on this.
Updated 1:54 PM
NHL - Red Wings and Stephen Weiss have come to terms on a long term deal, terms not yet disclosed.
Looks like we won(?) the bid against St. Louis...
Hold the phone...
Updated 2:00 PM
Weiss is going to be $6 mil a year signing for Wings or Blues.
Dear god the brakes are squeaking LOUDLY on my enthusiasm about this deal (if it's with Detroit). Paying Weiss $6 million when we chewed out Val for wanting $5 million is CRAZY.
Updated 2:10 PM
Stephen Weiss to the Red wings reportedly a done deal.
Looks like the deal is back on? If it's for $6 million, I'm going to sh*t a chicken.
Updated 2:19 PM
Stephen Weiss to DET is done. 5 years, $4.9M.
Kept it under $5 million for a player who has been more productive than Filppula. I'll settle down now.

Count these two out of
#RedWings picture: Valtteri Filppula and Damien Brunner.
Brunner looking for big money? That would make me a sad panda.
Updated (by me) at 2:50 PM
Franzen - Datsyuk - Abdelkader
Alfredsson - Weiss - Zetterberg
Third and Fourth line players to fill in...Helm, Nyquist, Andersson, Emmerton, Miller, Eaves, Tatar, Bertuzzi, Samuelsson...holy crap - look at our forwards.
Updated 2:55 PM
@Real_ESPNLeBrun, Valteri Filppula agrees to 5 year deal for $5M per year with TB.
So again...it was all about getting that $5 million dollars and not really about actually BEING that 1st line center. Disappointing end to the run with my wife's favorite Wing.
Updated 3:22 PM (just because I liked this one from Jordan)
People need to quit freaking out about cap space. Bodies will be moved, RFAs will be signed. All is well
Updated 3:38 PM
Lots of action on UFA winger Dan Cleary. Wings still in the mix
Looks like we have just north of $2 million in Cap space...
Updated 6:11 PM
Wings sign forward Luke Glendening to 1-year, 2-way deal. He flourished in AHL playoffs for Grand Rapids.
Didn't follow the Griffs this year but apparently he was a key piece and adds to our deep pool of prospects. Always thinking many steps ahead.
Also, about an hour ago:
Helene St. James
Ken Holland: "Still like to look at making move or two, might take month or two to shape roster."
Ken Holland: "Still in touch with Daniel Cleary, expect Damien Brunner to be moving on to another situation.... But been a tremendous day."
Updated 6:11 PM
Damien Brunner officially turns back on Wings. Gustav Nyquist exhales, smiles, pats self gently.
I don't know who that Sullyosis character is on Twitter but damn, his avatar is sweet.
The best way to describe today was we just went in a big circle. We didn't get any better or any worse, we just have different players on our team.
I think that all moves, thus far, are good. We have enough "young" players who will get their chances this year with the numerous options available for the third and fourth lines. Darren Helm is still (hopefully) an elite penalty killer and lets hope that his rehab has let him have time to think about his offensive "woes." That leaves basically Gus, Andersson, Eaves, Miller, Bert, Tootoo, and any other prospect (Tater, Mursak, still consider Emmerton a prospect) who could at any moment could land a full-time roster spot. Brunner has no reason to want so much money besides his agent chirping in his ear and I believe that we will still sign Cleary to a modest deal. Our D is fine, so we just need to hope Ken delivers on the Front.
@HockeYTown Mursak inked a deal in the KHL months ago and Emmerton is not a prospect any more than Jakub Kindl is. They are both full time roster players. Helm is doing better but don't expect anything elite from him other than simple 4th line play. He just needs to get healthy. He's lost a TON of muscle mass.
Dan Cleary gone? Time to break out the champagne! Although I won't believe it until I see him sign with another team.
Fil should start to sell whatever he is smoking because he'd make way more money that way.
I like the Alfie signing. 1 year - 3.5M cap hit? How can you argue with that?
@moorecha I want Brunner back too but for the right money and length. I don't want to be the Buffalo Sabres when they signed Ville Leino to a 6 year deal
Cleary wants 4 years. That's wayyyyyy too long for him. Even 3 years would be too long. He can't keep up already and he's too injury prone for long term contracts. As for Fil, good riddance. I liked him but he's not a no. 1 center on a cup contending team. Maybe a bottom dweller like Edmonton or Colorado.
@ChrisRuffino " That's wayyyyyy too long for him."
Yeah, four years too long.
Got to wonder if the lack of phone calls at noon might be a wake up call for him.
Cleary's knees plus age really rule him out of any extended contract.
Yeah, I was pretty shocked by that one.
Just saw a Photoshop of him in the Red and White and number 11 and my first thought was that could mean no more Cleary.
