Our Heroes: Issue #1

Written by Drew on .

Greetings!  The Wings are in 9th place and for the first time in many ages, are in danger of missing the Stanley Cup Play-offs!  Who can save this team from hitting the golf-course pre-maturely?

Thomas Holmstrom as Wolverine

holmstromwolverine

He takes a licking and keeps on ticking.  He's nasty, ill-tempered, and has messed up teeth.

Henrik Zetterberg as Spider-Man (Zetterman?)

zetterrman

Quick, agile, and intellegent.  He's effective attacking and defending, a jack of all trades.

Pavel Datsyuk as Gambit

Funny accent, good with a stick, and always seems to have an ace up his sleeve.

Hey, it's Friday, our news doesn't come until way late.  I'm just trying to entertain you guys.  I've got more lined up, or if you think this is stupid, I shall go no further...

Let's Make a Deal?

Written by Drew on .

Khan(!) fired off a post at 9:30 last night.  The article most discusses King Lidas, but the winged_wheellooming Cap situation is also touched on.

Holland said he’s talked “a little bit’’ with potential trade partners as the Red Wings face a Monday deadline to trim at least one player and roughly $700,000 from their roster prior to Johan Franzen’s scheduled return to the lineup Tuesday in St. Louis.

The Red Wings can only acquire a draft pick or future considerations in return. And when teams know you must move a player or two or lose them on waivers, that makes it harder to deal.

“All you can do is call around, get the word out,’’ Holland said.

If he is unable to make a trade, Holland said the only other option is to waive a player or two.

This stuff is imminent, gang.  Someone is moving and moving soon so we can (finally) get the Mule back into the lineup.  I think it's worth mentioning that if Franzen would wait until after the Olympic Break to return, it would allow Kenny Holland more time to work out a deal so we're not simply waiving players...just a thought.

Oh and Andreas Lilja is still alive after playing in his first game in nearly a year.  Holland is planning on heading to Grand Rapids to watch him play this weekend.  Conditioning stints only last so long, and a decision about Lilja (even more Cap-related-issues) is coming soon.

Wings Bring out Best In Goalies

Written by Drew on .

The opposing goalie, that is.  Just take a look at Jonas Hiller...

2/3 vs Wings: 47 shots, 46 saves, 1 GA...

hiller4wings

2/4 vs Kings: 31 shots, 25 saves, 6 GA...

hiller5kings

Now granted, I didn't watch the LA/ANA game so I can't make any comparison of quality chances, deflections, etc.  And I realize that he was playing on back-to-back nights...but come on.  .979 sv % against the Wings, .806 sv % against the Kings.

That's a pretty big margin.

Score Watching Still Sucks

Written by Drew on .

Well...here's how those games played out last night:

2-5-wcscores

An early Valentine's Day (I am NOT seeing that movie, by the way...sorry, Justine) present is the fact that NONE of these games went into overtime.  No three point games?  Sorry, Gary.

So what do those scores mean in terms of the standings?  Well, I'm glad you asked because I already had this ready to go:

wcs2-5-10

So we're no longer tied with Nashville, but Colorado and Vancouver didn't get any farther away and Dallas and Anaheim didn't get any closer.  We still have more than a game buffer before we fall any spots in the standings, and remain within an arm's reach of 6th place in the Western Conference.

Anybody else get a sense that Denver is ripe for a fall?  The moving and shaking in Calgary might see that team start winning again (or maybe not) and Nashville, so long as Barry Trotz, AKA Jack in the Box is behind the bench, will always be tough.  So I'm going out on a limb and predicting that we're not too far off from the Rocky Mountain boys being in the spot we are now, on the outside looking in.

What the Hell?

Games to Watch

Written by Drew on .

Don't let the fact that the Red Wings have a few days off keep you from being stressed out.  Here are tonight's Western Conference games and what they mean to us...

2-4wcgames

Dallas (9th) at Columbus(14th)...If Dallas wins, they're only one point behind us. Columbus is 11 points behind us and no real threat.  Go BJ's.

Vancouver (3rd) at Ottawa (East)...simple - Go Eastern Conference.  Vancouver is only six points clear of Detroit.  Hopefully, Ottawa keeps its hot streak going and leaves it that way.  Go Sens.

San Jose (1st) at St. Louis (12th)... San Jose is pretty much out of reach of Detroit, unless we can make up 17 points between now and the end of the season.  St. Louis, on the other hand, is only 5 points behind us.  So, as much as I hate to say it: Go Sharks.

Colorado (6th) at Nashville(7th)...We're tied in points with Nashville, but they have two games in-hand on us.  The Avs are currently 4 points clear of us.  Want to bet this game goes to OT?  I still think the Avs can still fall apart this season, and I don't want Bubba taking any points.  Go Divealanche (in regulation, pretty please).

Edmonton (15th) at Minnesota (13th)...The Oilers' goose is pretty much cooked already.  Pinky's Wild are 6 points south of Detroit in the standings.  Go Oil.

Anaheim (11th) at Los Angeles (5th)...The Toronto Situation Room aided Anaheim in climbing within 3 points of us in the Western Conference.  Los Angeles is 7 points ahead of us.  This one is tough, but I hope the Kings stay hot (9-1-0 in their last 10) and stick it to the Ducks (in regulation, of course).  Go Kings.

How many go to OT?  I'll say at least 2 out of 6.

Sweden is Not Happy

Written by Drew on .

So the Olympic Break looms, rosters need to be finalized by February 15th.  And Johan Franzen is set to play before that...and the Swedes are not happy about it, according to the Free Press:

"You can ask yourself the following question: Would he have been back on the team if Detroit would have been first in the conference? Or is it because they're in a tough spot?"-- Mats Näslund, Team Sweden Manager

The local doc also chimed in...

"Letting (Franzen) play within the first six months after the injury is way too early, medically. ... They are risking the function of his knee."-- Bjorn Waldebäck

The Mule had something to say to his countrymen...and it might surprise you.

"He should know about me. He's around here every day. Has he seen me practice? I don't think so.  I'm going to try to get three games in here before the break, but I probably won't be 100% and then I don't want to play in Olympics. I don't want to risk not being any good."

There you have it folks, Johan doesn't want to risk playing in Vancouver...interesting.

Discuss.

ANA 2, DET 1, TOR 1

Written by Drew on .

The TV went off right after Toronto looked at that Duck swatting the puck out of the air into blind-justiceour net, and then telling us it was a good goal.

Again, I'm not proud of moments like that, but I wasn't going to waste the use of my vocal chords by screaming about it...I simply went to bed.

The system is broken.

The puck bounced off of him and then he swatted at it?  You have got to be kidding me.  We have this room set up in Toronto equipped with TV monitors so that missed calls can be corrected...problem is, they're not getting corrected.  How many times are we going to hear the "well, they're right 99% of the time but..." argument?  It's most certainly not 99% of the time anymore.

Get rid of the situation room if you're going to make it so blatantly obvious that it doesn't work.  We're not the NBA, we're not the NFL, this is the NHL and I don't want your replay system anymore...not the one in current use, anyway.

We have a system where crease violations can get goals called off with no chance to redeem.  We have a system where "intent to blow" whistles stop plays while the puck is mid flight, with no chance to redeem.  And apparently, a player can now bat a puck out of mid-air with his glove and some idiot with a chip on his shoulder in Canada can tell us all that it's a good goal.

The system is broken...and it won't be fixed.

Howard has better rebound control than you think.

Written by Chris on .

So no matter how well Howard plays lately, there has been a few within the Detroit blogging community that have failed to give him much credit, rather have ragged on his rebound control.  It was especially bad in recaps of today's game.  Matt from the usually incredible On the Wings Blog, regularly takes Howard to task, even unimpressed with his Kings performance early this year.   Today he wrote:

His rebound control sucked on the Sharks’ two goals. You can blame the defense for the plays that led to those all you want, but the fact is Jimmy needs to have better rebound control.

Snipe Snipe Dangle Dangle (best blog name on the internet?) wrote:

Jimmy Howard Gets the Golden Facepalm Award:
San Jose’s first goal came off of a rebound that just shouldn’t have happened. Their second goal came off of a weak-ish rebound too. He did manage to lock things down after that, but the first goal was a killer.

And even Drew here at NOHS wrote:

Jimmy gave up two softies (he needs to work on that rebound control) before finally settling in.

Jimmy Howard: Better at rebound control than Drew thinks.

Now I'm sick of hearing about Jimmy's rebound control problems.  While it isn't his best attribute, he certainly doesn't have the problem others are claiming.   First things first, this entire article isn't about last night's game.  Regarding that, the first goal was somewhat of a poorly placed rebound, but on a slapshot like labeled top shelf, it is hard to save, let alone control it.  The second one again was also not the greatest (and actually more controllable than the first), as he went to clear it to the corner and it hit his pad rather than stick.    However, on both goals, his biggest problem wasn't where he placed the rebound, it was his next decision that cost him the goal.   On the first, he wiffed a clearing attempt with his stick.  While on the second, he went to cover the puck when he should have played the save, which would have been easily done.  Poor decisions yes, but both were rebounds that were put in a place

But overall, many of those who aren't stupid goalies forget that a rebound that is right in front of you IS somewhat controlled, and while it isn't the prime place for the puck to go, it is better than two to three feet to the left or right of you.  Basically, the best way to think of it is you want rebounds to be controlled in the following order of best to worst situation:

1) Control with the glove (complete control of the next play).

2) Catch in chest (creates stoppage of play)

3) Deflect to the corner (when cover isn't possible, no chance at immediate scoring chance)

4) Rebound right in front of you (as you are in position for the next shot already)

5) Far rebound to the left or right of the body, far away from the net (not good, but at least it is away from the net for a chance at recovery).

6) Short rebound to the left or right (worst situation, no recovery time and not in position).

Now it isn't always smart or even possible for a tender to try to catch all shots or deflect all shots to the corner.  Control of this type require an extra turn of the body, which then negates additional blocking area causing more goals when used improperly.  Howard isn't great at sending all shots to the corner, but he is great at making the right decision of type of save to make.  He regularly keeps his chances at an initial save high, while still keeping the initial rebound in front of him, giving him a chance to recover without a lot of movement.  Sure this does cause more shots, but the save percentage of these shots is still very high.

Osgood, on the other hand, is one of the best in the league at reducing shots through excellent rebound control, but at the same time, he opens himself up often to do this.  He is beaten blocker side often because he opens his blocker up to attempt to deflect the puck into the corner.  He is great at leading with his stick on shots from the point, but doing that creates a greater risk of an open five hole for deflections.  Finally, when Ozzie makes a save and attempts to put it into the corner, but fails due to a tip/misjudgment etc., his body position will naturally cause the puck to hit him, deaden, and deflect a few feet to the sides of him, making for an easy tap in.

It basically becomes a situation of smart rebound control, and overall, I would say Howie is better at it than Osgood right now, and in fact, better at it than a lot of others in the league.  And remember, a rebound is better than a goal 100% of the time.

What we saw from Howard last wasn't control problems, it was his next decision.  The best next play in those situations isn't always to immediately cover it, as this opens yourself up to be burned if you don't get to it first.  Sometimes you have to wait for a safe moment to try and cover, which Howard didn't do last night.

Winner of Worst Goalie Ever Award (per Google Images)

Let's go Red Wings.

Finally...Something.

Written by Drew on .

From the Free Press...

Jonathan Ericsson, who was benched Tuesday, will be back in the lineup tonight. Holland said Jimmy Howard will get the start in goal.

Other than that, it's the same old stuff.  So I suppose we're to assume the same lineup that skated last night aside from the Big Rig being in for Nik Jr.  Here's how I would do it...

Holmstrom-Zetterberg-Datsyuk
Cleary-Filppula-Bertuzzi
Draper-Helm-Eaves
Maltby-Miller-Williams

Lidstrom-Rafalski
Ericsson-Stuart
Lebda-Meech

Howard (starting)
Osgood

So basically, the big question of the day was "Ozzie or Jimmy?"  Now we know.
