That game was dumb. Phoenix rode a wave of lucky bounces, bad calls and poor sportsmanship to beat Detroit 5-2. Not much to say about this game, really. Detroit played well, but just had some terrible breaks go against them late.
Mike Smith got bailed out by the refs in the second period and then, of course, adds an empty net goal at the end. Next game is Monday against the Sharks. Hopefully the Wings can leave all that bad luck in Phoenix where it belongs.
Hoo boy. I'm not saying the Wings deserved to win, but that game was a primer on what's wrong with the NHL rulebook and its officials. A BS whistle over an imagined medical issue -- I hope you don't like to see goals off extended periods of pressure, guys, because Smith just showed everybody what to do about that. An even-up embellishment call, something that is still in the rules even though the refs get it wrong the vast majority of the time they call it, and even though the 2005 changes of emphasis pretty much eliminated the diving problem (because you don't need to dive to get a call). All it needed was an "I lost sight of the puck" call where the replay showed the puck was never frozen and was in the goal before the whistle, and they'd have covered the whole menu. There are times I feel like turning off the TV when they show the names of the referees before the opening faceoff, and last night I should have listened to my gut.
Bad luck? You're kidding right? It wasn't just bad luck, it wasn't just the refs, it was pure incompetency and a total inability to play for 60 minutes (as per fucking usual in losses like these). You cannot blame 5 unanswered goals on bad breaks.
To pull our sieve at the end was also dumb, were they honestly expecting to gain 3 goals in a couple of minutes? All they did was get even more embarrassed by Smith, and deservedly so. Hopefully this wakes them up. You can't go beat a 6-0 team, then go up 2-0 the next game only to cruise for 40 mins. If you do that, the other GOALIE scores on you. I have no sympathy because they have already proved this season that they are better than this total shambles we saw last night.
Having said that, Mike Smith is a notorious diver, and has been for a while now. Just ask Henrik Sedin and Andrew Shaw. Do love this article though http://octopusthrower.com/2013/10/20/red-wings-make-mike-smith-cry/
