Hey gang...been a while since you've heard from me. I apologize for that - work's got me running' around like a madman (I've put in over 18,000+ miles on the road since mid January). But forget all that - it's Red Wings play-off time and it's long past due that we get re-acquainted. Oh and my personal lap top is dead (RIP) and my work computer won't let me upload images so I'm sorry for that as well.
Let me start off by saying that I did end up nodding off somewhere in the second period of last night's game. I'm ashamed to admit it. I was awoken to the sound of the NBC Sports crew announcing Anaheim's third goal...not the manner in which anyone who's a fan of the Winged Wheel would like to hear. I then had to sit there and watch our lead evaporate as Bobby Ryan tied it up late in the third.
It's amazing how the impartial NBC Sports guys will simply shift their favor to whichever team is playing better at the time...I suppose that's the way it's supposed to be...but it's annoying nonetheless.
Regardless, Mrs. Nightmare On Helm Street's favorite Finn made one of the prettiest plays of the season toe dragging around Katy Perry and dishing it to Goose for match point barely into overtime. Series tied 1-1 heading back to Hockeytown.
But that's not all. Make the jump.
Bad news...real bad news. Rookie phenom Danny Dekeyser is out...as in out for the rest of the post-season.
"He's done." --Mike Babcock
...that simple but powerful quote from Babbles comes to us by virtue of the Free Press.
A huge blow to the Red Wings defense. Dekeyser had been one of the more steady defenseman for Detroit down the stretch and through the first two games, despite his age and experience at the NHL level. The rookie broke his thumb at some point in the third period...we have seen the last of #65 this post season, it would seem.
Obviously, we have three capable defensemen waiting in the wings...Carlo Colaiacovo, Ian White and Brian Lashoff. Who gets in will be a big question mark that Babcock will have to answer.
As for the game itself...it proved two things to me.
1.) The Red Wings can totally dominate Anaheim
2.) The Red Wings can also piss away a three goal lead
...the second proof positive is very worrisome to me. I hate that feeling when it seems like no lead is safe and it won't be easy to forget about that third period collapse in this game throughout the rest of the post-season...I assure you the TV peeps won't make it any easier.
If Detroit can come out and blow the Ducks out of the water (heh) in Game 3 and win by 2+...then I'll start feeling better.
As of right now - try to enjoy the win. It's now a best of 5 series.
Let's go Wings.
Upset and frustrated about Dekes, if we pushed play instead of letting them push it he might be okay today. Oh well.. the young guys need to learn and its just a case of coulda, shoulda, woulda. Put in Carlo and have Erickson step up his physicality and we'll be ok.
So no comment from the team on Franzen not being on the PP to start OT? That concerns me as much as Dekeyser.
Great post as always... Losing DK is gonna be huge..rookie or not, he's been a rock for us. Wish him ALL the best in recovery, and will welcome him back next season, and POST season. If I had to guess, I'd say Coliacovo will get the nod, or possibly Whitey for his experience, and right handed shot? Go WINGS!! Get the JOE ready to go eh!!
I think we need to ask ourselves a serious questions as Red Wings fans. How far do we really want this team to go? Let's be honest, we don't really have a shot at winning the Stanley Cup this year and now that Dekeyser is out, who was our second best defensemen, we definitely don't have a shot IMO. However, if we make a run, to say...the conference finals, won't that just reinforce to Holland that this team is just a couple of tweaks away from being a Cup contender, when in reality, we all know that's not true. If we lose in the first round, AGAIN, that should make it clear to Holland that changes need to be made. What do you guys think?
PS, I love how quickly Dekeyser picked up on the lovely Wings trait of getting hurt.
@austikyl Dude, you are all over the place and it's getting really hard to follow you. You just wrote a novel based on almost nothing I said so I think it's time this conversation ended. Obama, tanking seasons, UofM?? Jesus, man, you must have ADD or something.
As for the injuries, I love how you conveniently left out the beginning of my statement, "More often than not." But of course, if you didn't do that, you wouldn't have been able to make your point, now would you :)
As for the Lions, it's because of SUCKERS like you that the Ford family hasn't been forced to sell the team. I'm a fan of accountability. If you're not good at owning a sports team, it's the responsibility of the fan base to stop going to the games and stop buying merchandise until the owner sells the team. But no, emotional little pussy's like yourself, whose mind isn't large enough to grasp the concept that you're actually trying to HELP your team and town, screw the rest of us.
Go wings :)
@austikyl @marti783 DAAAAAMN, how much Kool-aid did you drink???? Do you hear yourself? Injuries? PUCK LUCK???? I pray to God you don't come in contact with anyone outside of our fan base because you would be an embarrassment. Basically, you're one of those Wings fans who looks at the world through rose colored glasses, huh? All of our players are the best in the world and if it wasn't for all those pesky injuries (year after year) we'd be the best in the league! First of all, more often than not, injuries are a reflection of how good you are. When we're constantly in the top 10 in man games lost, that means we're a weak team, not unlucky. Puck luck? I'm not even going to dignify that assertion with a response. You honestly sound like you work for the Wings PR department. I love how you're using all these talking points. Over-ripe draft picks? What, did you just come from having lunch with Holland or something?
Yes, we are rebuilding, I'm not denying that. But it's about HOW we are rebuilding. We need to have some roster turnover. We've had some of these players for far too long and they've outlived their usefulness. We need some new blood. If I knew Holland was gonna make some trades and get some new faces in here, then I'd have nothing to worry about. But something tells me, if we make a long run to the CF, people like you are gonna be chugging that Kool-aid and saying, you see I knew we were good! Every single year since '09 people like you have had an excuse as to why we didn't win. Oh, we're just so close! Hell, even if we lose in the first round you'd still be singing this teams praises.
And I never compared the Calgary Flames to Detroit, I implied if we're not careful, we're headed in that direction. Read, then think, then type. In that order.
And I loved the "true fans" routine. What's that? You suggested we might not be as good as we'd like to believe? KILL HIM!
@marti783 I can't get on board with that kind of talk marti783, I want them to win until they can't win anymore. Sorry.
@ThroatShot Motion seconded.
@marti783 @austikyl I think you've got a point about the rose-colored glasses. I like the young talent and I'm optimistic about the future, but it's a fact that since the end of the Joey MacDonald-palooza winning streak in February 2012, if you forget about three-point games and count a loss as a loss, this team is 31-39 in the regular season and 33-44 overall. Detroit is not currently an elite team.
@austikyl I agree, I probably should have waited.
@moorecha I understand but you risk becoming the Calgary Flames...
@Jay Argentina Umm, and the 5 years before that?
You know, I was just about to write a very long response disagreeing with everything you said but it just occurred to me, the people I am disagreeing with probably don't watch hockey, they just watch the Red Wings. Because if you watch games outside of the Red Wings you would know that Cleary and Abby aren't top line forwards. You would understand that changes need to be made. But instead, you just keep overvaluing our talent because they're in a Wings uniform or you just refuse to accept that maybe some of our players just aren't that good.
Umm last year an eighth seed won.
I m trying to figure what what you want done differently. We have data and Z together and Abby is learning to replace Homer. We have maybe the best third line in the NHL and they are all rookies. Our second line is experienced and the only possible move would be Cleary for Bert once he returns to game form. And our forth line has two very good pk'ers. Our défense is young and maturing. Finally Ericsson and Kindl living up go potentiel. Dekeyser and Smith are rookies and only will be better.
Have to give players time to mature. I am liking what I see, and I see a very bright future.
@Reddy @marti783 @WingNut83 @moorecha We don't have a clue whether this team is a contender? Really? My god, I know there are kool-aid drinkers out there but come on. This team hasn't made it further than the 2nd round the past 3 years and we barely made the playoffs this year, but yea, we really can't know for sure.
Year after year we complain about this team not being tough enough, not being quick enough, not being good enough. All I was saying was that if we make a run to the CF, which would be more a result of a good team getting hot than anything else, it would overshadow the REALITY that this team needs changes. I'm not really rooting against my team, I'm just much more okay with us losing in the first round than years past.
And hypothetical for you, would you root for your team to lose if you knew they were eliminated from the playoffs and losing meant having a shot at the no. 1 pick?
@marti783 @WingNut83 @moorechaACTUALLY, In reality none of us have a god damn clue whether this team is a contender, especially not compared to Ken Holland, a professional GM who has had more success than you've had lunches.
Fans complain when things are going wrong and we rave when things are going right. Just now its ok so why on earth would any sane person want their team to fail. If they make it to the CF then Holland is obviously right and YOU are wrong. Enough of your BS, LGRW.
@WingNut83 @marti783 @moorecha I'm not trying to sound like a bad fan but all I'm saying is, I don't have faith in Holland to make the changes necessary to become a true cup contender if we make a deep run in the playoffs. Let's not forget all the complaining we were doing this season about who needs to be traded.
And btw, who won the previous 5 cups? Top seeds. Just sayin
@marti783 @moorecha So you propose blowing the team up? A different style of play? What needs to change? I think losing Lidstrom was change enough. Last years 8th seed won the CUP. The team just needs to remember its the playoffs and you dont let off the gas for one minute. We got the road win we needed, now lets take care of home ice and persevere. We are just seeing the parity that the league has been trying to create for years. LGRW
