An unfortunate result in game 1, but not the end of the world. Going forward, the Red Wings will need to shoot more and turnover the puck less if they want to win this series.
More after the jump:
Why all teams didn’t put a heavy forecheck on our young defense is beyond me, because every team that did seemed to win. Guys like Smith and Kindl are terrible under pressure. Ericsson made several blatant turnovers last night and that was without pressure.
The PK wasn’t good enough. Both of the Duck goals were scored on the power play, so the Wings need to either stay out of the box, or tighten up when down a man. What’s worse is both goals were scored as a result of dumb penalties. Disagree with me if you want, but Tootoo’s crosscheck was dumb. As for Kindl’s shot over the glass, he had other options, but pressure got to him.
The Ducks’ strategy for defending Datsyuk seems to be to hack and whack at his stick and legs until he loses control of the puck. Not really sure how you counter that, especially since their star players just drop to the ice when touched.
I liked the forecheck of our third line, but they’re not really creating dangerous chances yet. Hopefully they will soon, because the effort and talent is there.
Next game is Thursday night against this same group of jackasses. Regroup. Dominate. Take home ice.
All in all, last night seemed to be a feeling out process for the team. Vets and stars trying to play conservative to cover for the youth. And the youth playing to not make mistakes, instead of playing to win. Lines tended to shy away from an aggressive forecheck, which led to the one and done offensive play last night. The stretch passing in the 1st period made the our forwards play too high in the defensive zone trying to get a jump on the outlet pass. This left a lot of real estate for team disney in our zone, effectively collapsing our D and giving them the boards and reducing the likelihood of Kronwall putting Salami through the glass. We started controlling both zones in those last 4 regular season games. We need to stop playing their game and start playing ours! LGRW
I saw a huge difference in our PK strategy comparing the last week of the season with last night. Last week of the season, we were giving huge pressure. All four players were attacking the puck or someone. Last night, they sat back and hoped shots hit them. Not good enough. The refs were pretty consistent calling nothing last night (at least fair-ish), but that really favors a thug, lower-skilled team like the Ducks. I hate how the sport totally changes when playoffs come, because refs stop enforcing rules. They allegedly don't want to decide games, but what this league seems to not realize is that IS what decides a lot of playoff games.
The level of intensity for the Wings dropped off in this game compared to the four previous ones, they need to step it up to the gear that got them into the postseason. That was the Ducks playing pretty much as well as they could, not so for the Wings. If they step it up they will win.
2nd Ana goal was off a retarded giveaway, less of that from now on please!
