Well that didn't last long. Per the Free Press:
Vincent Lecavalier will not be joining the Detroit Red Wings, neither will David Clarkson nor Nathan Horton. Stephen Weiss, on the other hand, could be wearing a Wings sweater next season. And defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo will be bought out by the team.
Poor guy barely gets a mention by Helene. He deserves better after his work with Detroit. I don't love this move, but I do know that Holland better use that extra $2.5 million in cap space that he'll have well.
And for the love of God, if that second buyout isn't used on #37...
In Holland we trust. Right?
I'm going to wait until the dust settles after this free agency to determine whether In Holland we Trust has become a fallacy or not. I have a wish list just like everyone else and I hope most of it comes true. Here it is:
1. Let Cleary walk. (For the LOVE OF GOD)
2. Buy out Samuelsson
3. Re-sign Brunner
4. Sign or trade for at least TWO top 6 forwards (I refuse to accept Abdelkader is a top 6 forward, regardless of what Holland wants us all to believe)
5. Sign a top 4 D-man
@marti783 I think you don't need to wait, because of all of those things, 1, 2 and 5 don't happen, 3 might happen and half of 4 might happen.
Today's Malik Report sums it up pretty well. They're just doing the same old safe thing they always do, never taking a risk, just overloading the roster. We need to re-sign Brunner, I don't give a crap about Fil walking.
Sammy and Bert staying put. So much for the youth movement. Most likely Sammy will get hurt though, or Holland is going to trade some youth this offseason.
Also the main reason for dropping Cola is Lashoff's contract moves to a one-way next season and Babs has him penciled in as D-man number 7.
Also, what happened to White? Does no one mention him as a UFA because we all know his is for sure gone?
@JOHNxJOHN Yeah, Holland was quoted a little while back saying they weren't offering him a contract.
"In Holland we trust. Right? "
No. Not even a little bit if the rumours of him being close to re-signing Cleary are true. Not even one teeny tiny little bit.
God I want #37 off this team so bad. Why the hell wouldn't Holland buy out Samuelsson and use that cap space on Vinny? Stupid move.
@SamSimmons it wasn't the money that lost Vinny. Philly was the only team willing to go more than 3 years for contract length. Holland was looking more for 2 or 3.
From report I got this was a standard buyout, not compliance. Compliance require cap hit over 3mil. Or so I was told.
@Jay Argentina No, I'm pretty sure only the "special" buyouts allowed last off-season (Redden, Gomez) required a cap hit over $3M. The Wings could use a compliance buyout on Cory Emmerton if they wanted to.
@garth @Jay Argentina That may be the case. The reason it even came up was that just the other day Holland had said he would not be using either compliance buyout and then when today's news broke I sent him a message saying that I guess Holland changed his mind. He is the one that said it wasn't a compliance and that there was a 3 million limit. I have not had a chance to verify either, though he is usually correct (even if he is a Hawks fan).
@Jay Argentina @garth The NHL allowed teams to execute one of their two compliance buyout options prior to the 2012-13 season on players with cap hits of more than $3 million. Two teams exercised the accelerated compliance buyout option: the Montreal Canadiens on Scott Gomez and the New York Rangers on Wade Redden. The players received full pay and counted at their full cap hit for 2012-13, after which the compliance buyout payments kick in. NOTE: The $3 million minimum applied only to accelerated compliance buyouts and does not apply to normal compliance buyouts
