Red Wings vs Blue Jackets Recap 1.21.2013

Written by Ryan on .

A much better start by the Red Wings tonight, but they fell apart in the 3rd period and were lucky to get the shootout win. The defense had a better game, but Quincey is still playing like garbage and is relying on Smith to pick up the slack.

Howard was sharp again, but at some point he’s going to have to stop a breakaway. I never blame goalies for giving up breakaway goals, but at some point, he’ll have to make a save. If he stops the first goal against, Columbus never gets back in the game.

More after the jump:

Brunner is for real. That shootout goal was so hot and dirty, if my mom had walked in, she would have thought I was watching porn. That said, he’s still adjusting. Smaller ice and bigger defenses, but he still has a great shot. I watched him on the PP tonight and he kind of reminded me of Brett Hull when he would sneak into open space for the big slapper. As for playing the point, I’m not a fan right now. Seems he’s worried about bringing the puck up himself and looks to get rid of the puck right away, often giving it to someone who isn’t ready which kills the rush. Give him time, though. He’s for real. The Production Line called him Homestar Brunner on Twitter, so until someone comes up with something better (hint, you won’t) that’s his name.

Lashoff! Congratulations on the goal and the added responsibility, FNG. Up by one goal and going to the PK? Get in there, rookie! It didn’t look like Lashoff’s first game.

I liked Tootoo dropping the gloves early. Didn’t win the fight, but it seemed to fire up the team. Whether the team started strong because of Tootoo or despite Tootoo, I can’t say, but the Wings are now 1-0 when Tootoo fights.

Datsyuk scored and I was thrilled to see it. That goofy smile and “aw, shucks…” celebration. I wonder if he’s really back yet, though. He’s in shape, but it has to be hard to leave his family behind on short notice to play the same game on the other side of the planet. He’ll get going soon. Probably tomorrow when the Red Wings fans lift the roof off the Joe and welcome the team home.

I didn’t hear any details on Colaiacovo, but he left in the third and didn’t come back. We’ll keep you posted.

Next game is tomorrow night against the Dallas Stars. Home opener! Friends, if you’re attending, welcome them home in style. (And no Tootoo whistles, k?)

LGRW!

New "veteran" d-man tonight apparently...

Colaiacovo is out according to Helen St.James of the Freep. While it was a rough hit he sustained, I feel that Holland needs to address the holes on D. Lashoff looked like an NHLer and I hope that helps his confidence so he can stick around. However, I think Holland should push an offer sheet to Subban. He would bring excitement to the team and look fantastic wearing the Winged Wheel.

@Imported_from_D Holland DEFINITELY needs to get aggressive on his defense. There's no sugar coating it, this defense is terrible. I've been patient with Quincey but it's not like he's just not producing, the dude is costing us goals. There's only so much time you can give him before he's begins to lose you games. I say either sit him, buy him out or trade him. Colaiacovo, well, it's sad and funny at the same time. We all knew he was injury prone. Not even a full 2 games in and he gets hurt. You couldn't make that up even if you wanted to. Kindl, I have no faith in when he comes back and big E is a 3rd pair D man at best. I would love to believe Lashoff can sustain his play but I doubt it considering how young he is. Holland needs to get aggressive on D if he wants this team to make the playoffs, no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

@Imported_from_D Seeing PK play for the Wings would be great, but I think the Habs would match no matter what the offer.

Was at the game; great to get a win over the BJ's... their fans....yikes! Not a single one of the "season ticket holders" around my seats knew that you couldn't hit the puck twice during a shootout, nor could understand why ramming someone's head into the boards from behind was a boarding penalty..... I feel like I need a shower after watching it with those "fans." Gross
