Hawks vs Red Wings Recap: 1.27.13

Written by Drew on .

I didn't get a chance to watch the game as I was traveling all day.  I was in the car for 11 hours today...the ice at the United Center could not have possibly been as smooth and as think as the ice on I-90 in Minnesota today.  Wisconsin was all snow and Illinois was all idiots...though that wasn't much of a surprise.

Here is Twig's recap of the loss tonight (Al Gore is apparently mad at him):

Unfortunate loss tonight as the Red Wings had every opportunity to win, but only managed to escape with one point as they lost 2-1 in OT. This team has multiple issues that it needs to fix, but I’ll focus on two for this recap.

First of all, this team is terrible in the opening 20 minutes. If they would just start on time and finish like they already have been, they’d probably be 4-1 right now instead of 2-2-1. Not only do they fall behind early, they generate no offense and just look bad all around.

Second, the power play. I like our first unit for the most part. They tend to pass too much, but they get the majority of the chances. However, they second unit does nothing. I’m not even sure if they pass too much because they have such a terrible time gaining the zone and setting up. Five games into the season I’m not ready to declare our PP a lost cause, but I’m definitely disappointed in what I’ve seen so far.

As for the players on the ice, our defense played a pretty good game tonight. Ericsson played well in his first game back. Quincey played fine. Smith was really good.

This was probably Howard’s best game so far, though I’m not sure he was ready for the GWG.

Next game is Tuesday night against the Stars. Start on time, boys. We’re 7 points behind the division leader already. Chip away!

The health of Helm is very important but this team is beginning to look like a legit playoff team...maybe not a contender, but at least a playoff team. The D is getting better and should continue to get better when White get's back and with our coaching staff, you know, coaching.  Our top priority though should be the PP. It cost us this game and will probably cost us others in the future if we don't fix it.

I thought Smith played great. Probably the player of the game, in my opinion.

Kronwall seemed to have a pretty terrible game. Bad passes and mishandled pucks.

I also thought Fil had a bad game. He seems to be trying way too hard to make offense happen, but without shooting it himself.

Brunner is still everything I had hoped he would be.

Emmerton?!?!?! Probably the 2nd time in my lifetime I can say I actually liked what he did out there. The 4th line as a whole created more chances than our PowerPlay did all night.

No Helm kills us. He's getting an MRI on his back on Monday. Hopefully it's just the anger from a bad start to the season, but If he misses significant time, I can honestly say that I am deeply worried about our playoff chances.
