All Coming Together

Written by Drew on .

Not a whole lot of new news to report this morning.

But we're gearing up for this short season that could start next week.  We could be watching Red Wings hockey in 7 days.  I know this has been painful.  I know that it has been frustrating.  But let's put our fan hats (made of tin foil) back on and think about not what we've lost...but what we are NOT losing.

1. We are not losing another year of Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg's career.

2. The chance to have a furious few days of talking about who is going to wear the "C" next week.

That's just a couple of things...I'm sure there is much more (feel free to chime in).  Imagine what we all would have been going through if King Lidas had indeed decided to come back this year, only to go through a work stoppage.

More after the jump.

As for the deal that was FINALLY hammered out.  Here are a couple of the details according to NHL.com:

  • The deal spans 10 years with an out option for either side after eight years
  • There will be a seven-year limit on new player contracts (extended to eight for players re-signing with their own team)
  • There will be a Salary Cap of $64.3 for the 2013-14 season with the floor resting at $44 million
  • The 2013 season Cap will reportedly be at $70.2 million. To be able to meet the reduced cap number in 2013-14, each team will be allowed the option of two compliance buyouts before the start of that season

...so countdown to our next work stoppage in 2021?

Ah who cares?  LET'S GO RED WINGS!

Who's our next captain?

I know this isn't a happy comment, but, before the lockout, I do remember reading a rumor that Pav won't return after his contract is up. Don't ask me where, but I distinctly remember reading it. I think the reason was that he and his wife quietly divorced a few years ago and she took their daughter back to Russia and he doesn't see her very much since he's playing over here and misses her.

I don't think we'll see a C on Pav. It'll be Z, without a doubt.

Zetterberg is out next captain for sure.

Another discussion worth having is how the new CBA rules will impact this team, or more specifically, how the new cap with impact the current teams who are over the 2nd year cap (Minn., Boston, Van., etc.). These teams will have to start shedding some of their contracts and all those teams who are sitting pretty under the cap (e.g. Red Wings) can snatch up some otherwise unavailable talent. In a weird way, it looks like not signing Parise and Suter may have been a benefit in disguise considering the new cap.

@marti783 Maybe Holland was being smart after all, I bet his psychic hockey sense told him this was going to happen. Besides, their contract was insane and screwed the Wild over in like 5 years under the old contract anyway.

Twitter got very whiny without hockey to fill up my timeline. And when I say "twitter got whiny," I mean I got whiny. But also twitter.

Also... on the line debate, isn't Filppula still injured?

@haiggrinder Z and Brunner has to start together.  You don't break up a combo that's been making sweet love for a few months now.
