First game all year that the Red Wings controlled the play from start to finish and the result was a 2-1 win over the Oilers. If Edmonton was going to win this game it was going to be with the power play, but Detroit's PK was very good. Wings also dominated the faceoffs which prevented the Oilers from starting many man advantages in Detroit's zone.
More after the jump:
Like Mick said, Datsyuk played his best game and was the number one star tonight. He was awesome at both ends of the ice.
They gave Brunner just one assist today. I thought Hank missed the loose puck that Pav sent to Kronwall, which would have given Brunner the secondary assist. Either way, Brunner played another strong game today and was only denied goals because of Khabibulin's outstanding play.
Two games in a row our blueline has been solid. My favorite tonight was Ericsson, though. He was tossing the Oiler forwards around like rag dolls. More of that, please.
This was Howard's best game. He made some great saves on some very good forwards and only got beat once because there were three guys standing in his way. Could the 20 year old Mrazek be pushing Howard to be better? I don't think Howard's job is in danger this year, certainly not after one game, but Mrazek played well and Howard matched the effort.
NOHS Three Stars of the Game:
First Star: Pavel Datsyuk. Like I said before, this was his best game. 1G 1A and some strong defensive play.
Second Star: Jim Howard: If you saw his numbers before the game, you may have felt the urge to hurl. Not all his fault by any means, but some more solid performances like this and he'll be fine.
Third Star: Zetterberg. 2A on the night and more hard work. Glad he's our captain.
One final note: That third line of Tatar, Abdelkader and Dwight Joakim played their butts off. I don't care that they didn't score, because they put in the effort. Tatar especially worked hard. There may not be a spot for him on this lineup, but he's ready when there is.
See you again tomorrow when the Wings play the Kings.
Glad Ericsson got a shout out. I thought he has played great hockey the last two games. Good stick work and gets physical when need be without getting out of position.
