It has been a few days since we last looked at the standings, so let’s take a look again and see where Detroit sits.
So after a rough last week or two, the Wings find themselves in eight place with a two point margin on Dallas and Columbus (with a game in hand on the Jackets). Not the best, but again, this could be much worse.
Why? Because this means the Wings hold their own destiny in their hands. SportsClubStats has the odds that Detroit makes the playoffs at 61.7%. But this is deceiving. Detroit doesn’t have to worry about any other team’s results these last nine games. If they win, they are in. They lose, they aren’t. Simple.

Now I’d love to finish seventh and face the Ducks in round one rather than the Hawks. Detroit isn’t likely going to catch St. Louis, who is on quite a tear lately. Minnesota, however, is falling at a dramatic pace. Now, Detroit is going to have to hope that the Wild stay the average team they’ve always been and put on a show themselves for this to happen, but it could.
According to SportsClubStats, Detroit has a 33% chance to finish in 8th, 17% in 7th, 8% in 6th. And hell, a 1% chance to finish in 4th.
Chance to win the cup? 0.3% So you’re telling me there’s a chance…
This is Detroit we’re talking about. Of course there’s a chance.
Realistically I'm just happy if we keep the playoff streak alive but I'm still hoping for a deep run. And playing the Ducks in the first round would be great!!!!
Before this season started I knew it was going to be a gamechanger for Detroit, and not in the good way. I think finishing in 7th or 8th while rebuilding on the fly is only something Holland can do. So yeah be pissed he didn't make any moves, but this is the first year in a long time it isn't stanley cup or bust for the Wings. We will have to settle for Playoffs or bust for a year or two. LGRW
"No chance" when sitting in the 8th spot with points "to give" and a game in-hand on the other 9th seed? Does your five day forecast tell you to watch for falling sky? I'm not ready to give up on this season. There are still PLENTY of points to be had. Even a two game losing streak (to tack on to the last game) and it's still not over, but a lot tougher.
I like how they give a percentage for winning the cup as if standings matter once the playoffs start
In the NHL all you have to do is get in the playoffs and you have a chance, hell look at LA last year. No one gave them a shot to win the cup and they shocked everyone. Maybe Jimmy gets hot in the playoffs and our offense gets going. I know no one wants to play Detroit in the 1st round even Chicago.
Doesn't make me feel any better. This team has had their destiny in their hands for a while, yet recently they're having trouble generating offense, have had their asses handed to them by the Hawks, and overall look like a mediocre team. I know they're capable of turning up the heat and storming through teams and securing a playoff spot, but the question remains 'will they do it?' Or has the shortened season and injuries (again) overwhelmed them?
@JOHNxJOHN The last two years it wasn't the cup or bust, it was coasting all season, finishing in a mediocre playoff spot and then a premature exit to an inferior team (last year at least). This year I have serious doubts as to whether they'll stay in the top 8.
@ThroatShot Compared to everyone behind them, they are.
