Wings fall to the Flames 3-2. We’re going to miss these two points. Actually we’ll miss all six that were available but lost to the Flames. Honestly it wasn’t for a lack of trying. The Wings had plenty of pressure, but didn’t take many shots early. Then frigging Kiprusoff played out of his damn mind the rest of the way.
More after the jump:
The line of Nyquist-Andersson-Cleary/Brunner was the best tonight. Lots of chances for Nyquist and Brunner had quite a few shots.
The second goal against Howard: I don’t know, you tell me. Ericsson puts it in his skates for some reason, Howard doesn’t know until the last minute, then kicks it in himself.
Third goal against Howard: Howard wanted some help from his D, but didn’t get any. Then when the puck did get to him, he whiffed on the clearing attempt.
Wings had plenty of chances on the powerplay, but only managed to give up a shorty.
The Detroit Red Wings have left themselves no room for error. This next game against Vancouver is huge, as are all of the games from here on out. Lose again and they're in trouble. Puck drops at 10:00 Saturday night.
Folks, it's been a rough week, for sure. Lots of bad stuff has happened to good people in the last 72 hours. Some the result of evil, some the result of tragedy. If you're reading this, you still have a pulse. Don't let this game or this season get you down. See you Saturday.
Yeah the constant "I like this team" and "we're where we should be" is getting really old. You were expecting an incredibly mediocre season followed by missing the playoffs for the first time in over two decades? Find a new job.
This roster is brutal to watch. Even when we get a lead I wait for them to find a way to lose. Doesn't matter if we have back-to-back games or 3 days off in between - they consistently fail to perform at a competitive level in the first period and habitually make stupid stupid mistakes that cost them games. So tired of hearing the same comments over and over from Babcock and the players. They should just apologize to the fans for their pathetic play and end the interview.
I'm just going to paste some comments from MLive, which, I think, sum it up:
Babcock has to go for being too stubborn. Look at what he says about Abby – the most improved player and a great compliment for Datsyuk. Well then why does Abby have 2 assists in 43 games? TWO! I don’t care if Pav likes playing with him because it doesn’t work. Pav himself has just 6 even-strength goals this year. On pace for his lowest total ever. So this duo is a total failure. Plain and simple. How many close games have we lost this year when one extra goal from that line would be the difference?
Same with Cleary. He has 5 assists all season. Tatar and Nyquist have played 25 less games, and in those games about 5 minutes less per game, and they both have 3 assists. And aren't -8 either. Last night was embarrassing to watch Dan Cleary play hockey.
And yet Babcock is so patient with these two non-producers. I dunno. If you put Pav with Nyquist and Andersson for 43 games I think they would easily produce more than the awful combinations Babcock has used. Between that and the nonsense decision to dump Tatar and the nonsense decision to keep scratching Tootoo when the team lacks energy. I dunno. I think you have to fire him. Offer him a chance to quit with dignity. And then try someone else.
Weren't we "sitting pretty" like a week ago? and Babcock our choice for the Jack Adams a few weeks before that? What has changed since then? It sure wasn't out lineup, because that was apparently etched on the walls of the JLA before time began. It sure isn't out level of play, because we've been effortlessly floating all season. It sure isn't our injury situation that's killing us, because we've actually seen players coming back since then. So seriously, why were we sitting pretty with the best coach in the league only a few weeks ago and now seem likely to see KH's goal of just making the playoffs unrealized?
The Wings are exactly where they deserve to be, I don't know what game you were watching but the "pressure" you talk about was barely there. They hardly got any actual real chances, they couldn't even enter the zone cleanly, unlike the Flames who just waltzed in every time. This is PATHETIC and I am sick of effortless games like this. The only good line was Nyquist-Andersson-Cleary(somehow). Brunner's shots lately have just been practice shots for the other goalie. It's QUALITY over quantitty.
Oh and Columbus beat Anaheim but the Wings can't beat Calgary for some reason. It's a really strange feeling to be a fan of a bottom feeder. They had better bring it against Vancouver. Although imo we're screwed already with this loss.
Quincy can f**k off. I don't care if he "worked hard" in practice, whether you get in the lineup should be determined by your previous play and he was a scratch for this one originally and rightly so. If the cage is messing with him he needs to sit out til he doesn't need it any more. Or get a clear plastic one like everyone else does when they're injured.
@haiggrinder I know statistically we're in the hunt for the playoffs as much as the others, but right now it is looking like it will be a three-way race for the 7th & 8th seeds between MIN, CBJ, and DAL.
@drw91 Tatar is #2 on our team in points-per-minute and #1 in Corsi. And he was playing with Tootoo and crew. Our future is now, and the non-player leadership of this team refuses to accept that in the forwards (though apparently in the D, it's ok). I'm ok with having a couple years losing if we are growing our young guys. Instead, we're losing and making them bitter. They'll only develop into AHL 2nd Liners if that's all we let them do.
@ThroatShot there is not much sense in KH wish of 'just making playoffs'. They'll play 4, maybe 5 more games and be done. No energy, no thinking, very robot-like plays. And I'm not talking robots made in Japan. These are made in China.
