Here's what I don't get...Why didn't we trade AWAY players that probably won't be here next year. I understand why we didn't trade to bring players in...it would have been a waste because we're not a true cup contender. But let's be honest, they have no intention of keeping Ian White around. So why not trade him to a team for something (anything) in return. Why just let him sign with a new team in free agency? Same goes for Fillipula. He want's more money than we're willing to give so why not trade him for prospects or draft picks. I don't think any of those players are the difference between us in the playoffs or not. I'm going to be very pissed if we don't resign both players and lose them to free agency because that would be a terribly managed situation by Holland.
@marti783 I'm under the assumption now that they just want White to be miserable, and in the end, they'll re-sign Filpulla even if it is overpriced. Trade White for a 5th Rd. pick or something, and trade Fil for a pair of 2/3 Picks. Bring Tatar up to take Fil's place, and I say we're a better team than before both of those trades, plus we acquire a few more picks.
I'm so bummed that we didn't trade away picks and prospects for someone we can't afford to pay next year.
@Crevek Filpulla, Cleary, and White alone give us $8.675M in space opened up from where we are now, and we are already under next year's cap.
Is everyone forgetting that WE signed DeKeyser? I'm a little disappointed that nothing happend, but did you honestly expect anything to? Of course not. Quit your bitchin'.
the Front office has failed beyond words . i will say no more as i am stunned. this team could have and should have been improved upon .
Another year of sitting on our hands while the rest of teams who are or who want to be contenders frantically scramble to improve. Since Calgary sold their best piece, I guess that makes us the New-Calgary Red Wings. We have chosen to fight for 6-10th seed every year, never rebuilding or making a push. The steals that were done in some of these trades (especially for nonpending-UFAs like Pominville) makes me really sad that we didn't get one or more of them. This also likely means pieces like Filpulla that we all desperately want to see gone are likely getting re-signed. Sigh...
@ThroatShot I don't want to see Filpulla gone - he is a legitimate top six forward. The thing about all of the teams that scrambled is they only improved on papers until they actually win something. The Wings have almost the same playoff record since '08 as they did after Wining the Cup in '98.
Nobody likes a know-it-all, fair-weather fan.
@michaelrollet Filpulla has 13 points in 29 games right now, playing with world-renowned talent at even strength and on the PP. This isn't an aberration from his pattern though, last year was. Filpulla = Hudler. They play basically the same tentative game. He wants $5M+ next year with those numbers. If we sign him for anywhere near that amount, it is a bad decision. On the last part, apparently not wanting the team to get bad and stay that way makes me a fairweather fan, so that's fine- I'll take that. I want us to win bad enough to want winning over senseless cheerleading. You can reply to this comment if you want, but this argument has been hashed out plenty the last few years on this site (especially a month or two ago) so I won't be responding further.
