Didn't that feel good? The Wings not only won, but won by scoring 4 goals. FOUR! Remember when that was our average per game?
Ahh the good ol' days.
Yesterday was a day when everyone played hard. The kid line looked stupid fast and furious. Franzen actually moved his feet towards the net! Abdelkader threw his body around so much I actually thought he deserved to be o nthe first line there for a moment.
If they play like they did yesterday, they will make the playoffs. Because if you compare the talent between Detroit and their two competitors for the last spot, Dallas and Columbus, there isn't even a question of who has the most. Detroit's talent level is still in the top 5-10 in the league.
What the other two have, Columbus espeically, is a level of hustle and determination that Detroit hasn't seen since Zetterberg shut down Crosby in 2008. It is honestly inspiring to watch the Jackets these days, because they aren't winning on anything other than heart.
Hit the jump for more on Detroit's heart:
If Detroit can match the heart that Columbus has shown in the second half of the season, or even get a litttle bit close, they will be a great team again. Great as in upset the #1 team.
It'll take a team buy-in though. You know Datsyuk will be at the level he needs to be, but guys like Franzen can't take shifts off. Abdelkader has to be a Detroit devil out there. Nyquist has to be a waterbug and skitter all over the ice. Every player has to believe.
By the way, Waterbug would be a good nickname for the kid. Discuss...)
Because this team has talent, but it needs to be harnessed. That'll take confidence, but confidence is earned through effort.
Do it Wings.
They also might upset a #1 seed.
I think this all goes back to losing guys like Draper and Maltby and not replacing that vocal leadership in the room. They need a guy to get everyone riled up and ready to play. I bet there was a lot of yelling in the room before last night's game. Having silent leaders is fine but there needs to be some vocal veterans in the fray as well. LGRW
@JOHNxJOHN I think you might be right there, we need someone vocal with authoritative presence. I think Bertuzzi coming back will make a big difference in that regard, he may not be vocal but having him around probably gives everyone more confidence. If you know you have an absolute badass to back you up it feels a lot better playing on a team like that in my experience.
And if they'd worked this hard when they played against Columbus, they might be safely in the playoffs by now.
After the cunucks game i admit i was worried but never gave up faith that they can pull it together last night was a good offensive but mostly defensive game but the guys came through for howard i hope they keep hank and dats been pulling this team the must be dog tired but after last night it didnt look like it they played great against the cunucks but couldnt finish them off but turned around and pulled off a great win last night we need the points i really didnt care about this season at first i was upset about the lockout but as soon as i knew there was hockey i couldnt stop watching alot of injurys to are other top guys had me nervous still does without bert and helm would love to have them right now but anderson, nyquist and tatar stepped up wish tatar was up here right now im hoping they can pull off the next three or at least two in regulation enough said as you put it its all about heart and playing the game
