Red Wings pick up a huge two points and Jimmy Howard gets his 4th shutout of the season as they beat the Coyotes 4-0. If this team plays this way for the rest of the season, they have a good chance of making it to the playoffs.
More after the jump:
I don’t know about you, but I enjoyed this game. Our defense still struggled to clear the zone and that’s what the Coyotes got the chances they had, but the difference was our forecheck. Everyone finished their checks tonight. Guys like Datsyuk and Zetterberg were throwing their weight around and Doan and the Coyotes couldn’t handle it.
Speaking of Doan, he lost his idiotic mind in the third. He’s a cheapshot piece of crap anyways, but when he’s losing he turns into a child. Moron. However, he did have the line of the night according to Pierre. Doan and Abby were chirping and Doan said, “11 points and you play with Pavel Datsyuk? Shameful. So then Doan went after Abby and made a fool of himself and while he was bawling his eyes out about his extra penalty, Abdelkader let a smile slip as a camera caught the moment:
The power play was great tonight. Guys were shooting and making good passes. I mean, Filppula of all people was good tonight. Filppula!
Penalty kill was also good. Guys blocked shots all night, though they did struggle to clear the zone at times.
Franzen worked his hairy tail off all game and at both ends of the ice. Up 3-0 late, he dropped in front of a shot from the point and blocked it. Franzen did that. Franzen!
DeKeyser is our second best defenseman. He makes some of the best outlet passes and he has less than 10 games of experience.
NOHS Three Stars of the Game
First Star: Jimmy Howard. Shutout and looked amazing doing it. No surprise here.
Second Star: Johan Franzen: 2G in one of his better games of the year.
Third Star: Henrik Zetterberg: 3A and he didn’t make a fool of himself like that other moron with the ‘C’ on his sweater.
Honorable Mention: Nyquist, Andersson and Brunner played great again, but this time the rest of the team joined in.
Next game is Wednesday against the L.A. Kings. Game 7.
i thought abbie was great last night. He was everywhere. He was physical and energetic. Had a few real good chances to put the puck in the net. I watched it on TV so i only saw what was on the screen, but he looked real good from what i saw. That is probably the quietest great game from Henrik Zetterberg.
Now that is a hockey game!.
How many times did Mickey Redmond say "wow!" haha.
3 powerplay goals!, 3 of them! like watching the redwings of old.
That was a really good game, though we got suuuuper lucky with the puck bouncing around the crease and Doan missing an open net backhander. That guy is a complete douche, I'm glad he's going to rot away the rest of his career in Phoenix with no chance of being engraved on any piece of silver.
The rookies are killing it at the moment! With DeKeyser in D I'm actually pretty happy about the future of this team.
Jimmy played out of his mind, possibly best game of the season for him.
Gotta give credit where due - Franzen was an absolute beast tonight. So was Abby. (And Z and Dats, of course).
The kid line was incredible as well. And imagine if we have Tatar rather than Cleary on line 2.
The only negatives tonight I saw was Smith and Cleary.
First time I really felt like I was watching MY team this season. Knew they still had it in there somewhere!
Great summary here for a great game, though I’m not sure whether to be excited or enraged that everyone suddenly cares. I mean, this is what we all knew this team could do; however, why not before tonight? I don’t know, but I’m so tired of feeling sad and frustrated with this team that I’m just going to be thankful to see them playing like they care.
I really, really LOVE this rookie line. I wish they got some more time and kinda wish they’d mix them in with the vets to inject energy and get some tutorials. Still, Nyquist-Andersson-Brunner are so exciting to watch. Andersson really has impressed of late. He’s using his size to ward off defenders, and then he makes nifty, accurate passes to teammates. In the case of Tootoo once, the pass was so good it tackled him.
DeKeyser has been great too. Not a lot to speak of offensively, but he’s a block machine. Solid breakout passes. Cool under pressure. Good communication directly defensive zone coverage. He’s everything we hoped Smith would be (no idea what’s happened to him this year; the summer needs to do him well). DeKeyser could be our next captain. Premature? Definitely. Do I care? No.
Even Abby was on my good list tonight. He’s a fine grinder/agitator, but he’ll never be a scoring Power Forward. When he plays his role, he does fine and even generates some offense.
These guys turned my hockey world upside down tonight. This is the same team that we expected to show up for every game this season but didn’t. If they can get a run going, we can be reminded that the Kings were the 8th seed in the West last year…
@moorecha Smith has been the biggest disappointment of the season thus far. So much in terms of build up and expectations, and he's often our worst D. I keep saying, "I wish that were Lashoff instead of Smith out there."
@ThroatShot It's an all-rookie line! I hadn't even thought about that. I get excited every time those guys are on. Nyquist is a special talent, Brunner is going to be just fine if they get him off the freaking point on the power play where he has no idea what he's doing, and Andersson will be Joel Otto when he grows up. I don't know if they're going to get in, but I think five years from now we're going to think this was worth it.
@Old Fat Bald Guy Not only that, but one shift last night was Smith-DeKeyser with them. That an all-rookie set of skaters.
