Stacked On Coaches: Tom Renney Joins Wings
Written by Chris on .

Well here's a bit of good news for the day. Wings hire former Edmonton coach Tom Renney as their new assistant coach.
We might be a bit weak on defense, but we are now stacked in the coaching staff ranks. Per TSN:
It didn't take long but Tom Renney is back in the NHL.
Just over a month after his tenure as head coach of the Edmonton Oilers ended, Renney signed a three-year deal to be an associate coach with the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday.
After head coaching stints with the Vancouver Canucks (1996-97) and New York Rangers (2004-09), Renney joined the Oilers in 2009 and became head coach in 2010.
Great stuff, he's a hell of a coach and will be great to keep Babcock on his toes and call him out when he's being stubborn. Love the move.No other news on the Wings front other than that Doan's agent came looking for a contract offer, which I found interesting.

Yea I read that he was waiting to see where Parise and Suter went till he talked to teams. We need to figure out a way to get datsyuk to see what we all say and think, and get him to call Semin and bring him in ! And I wouldn't trade tatar after how he played in the iihf w.c. I'd trade emmerton and mursak and a pick for a good d man instead
if any d man need ousted its Quincey, he's an oaf. rumor has it that Semin is KHL bound :(
Ericsson makes his share of mistakes, but i think he really found himself a solid spot on the PK. the guy's offensive skills are atrocious, so there's no way to justify putting him in either of the top two pairings. but they do need a big, experienced guy like him on the PK. plus, as mentioned above, the Wings really aren't in a position to be trading away D-men at this point. as it sits right now, they have exactly six (counting one rookie already, in Smith). signing a proven winger is still important, but at this point, finding another top 4 D-man should be priority 1 for Holland. Nyquist and Smith absolutely must be off limits in trade deals. but, as much as i'd rather not see it, Tatar might have to be part of some package to get a deal done to shore up the defense. maybe Kenny should consider begging #5 to come back for one more year.
Esp Semin, he's better defensively then ppl realize, if u don't believe me watch the replays of the caps vs bruins 1st round playoff series and ull see, he can put up more points then doan and already has GREAT chemistry with Pavel, which pavel needs after having lazy players on his team. And he also has a good 10-12 years in him, instead of 3 like Doan.
Adding Renney was really good, adding Doan and perhaps Semin could work out just fine, especially Doan
Trading role players will only get you different role players. I like the Renney thing though. Hopefully he gets along well with Babcock.
When Ericsson was out with injury the wings were getting killed on the PK. Big E is a huge part of our team and we need him now more than ever.
Ericsson? our best PKdefender? Trading away defensemen at all is not quite what we need right now.
i like this. wings now have a legit coach to fall back on if babcock fails hard this year.
I don't think Babs will fail, but it never hurts to have someone pushing everyone to be their best. (player and non-player alike) @Twig
