Travis Moan to Detroit? No Thanks.
Updated 4:30 PM.
We took a little break over the weekend, but one thing that didn’t was trade rumors. So what are the Wings looking for?
“To me, if we could get another heavy winger, or heavy forward, or D — those would all be good things to help you,” Babcock said, as reported by the Detroit News. “I put together a wish list every year, this time of year, and then management does what they can do.”
Specifically, a few outlets have mentioned that Wings might be interested in Travis Moan, the Montreal winger:
One name that’s been linked to the Red Wings is Montreal winger Travis Moen. The 29-year-old pending UFA who won a Cup with the 2007 Ducks is presumably the type of player Babcock wants.
And here’s another thing to consider about Moen – he’s one of the key forwards on the Canadiens’ league-best penalty kill, one of the few areas where the Wings have struggled.
That’s not the only one. TSN mentioned it as well:
I’ve heard some rumblings, like the Canucks, Detroit will, or has shown some interest in Moen.
I’m sure [Canadiens GM Pierre] Gauthier is willing to move his expiring contracts – namely Hal Gill, Chris Campoli, Travis Moen and Andei Kostitsyn.
My thoughts? Well they’re after the break:
Now, first off, my knowledge of Moan exists of watching the occasional game on Center Ice and NHL 11, so this isn’t supposed to be an expose on Moan himself. But let’s take a quick look at his stats:

So he’s a fourth liner and from the sounds of it, is a pretty decent one. But a fourth liner is exactly what the Wings don’t need; we have a plethora of ‘em. The Wings PK has struggled, true. Yet the Wings best PK’er will essentially be a deadline pickup when he returns from injury: Patrick Eaves.
The Wings are more than stocked with 3rd and 4th liners. The Wings need a gritty, goal scoring, power forward. A Franzen with more teeth. As much as I hate to say it, someone like Clowe has been for the Sharks.
So I have to say, thanks but no thanks for Moan. It simply doesn’t make sense.
Update 4:30: Looks like he's injured for a while too. Just another reason to pass.
