Parise Watch Update

Written by Chris on .

Just passing along some good news on the one guy us Wings fans want more than any other (excluding Weber).  Well at least for me.  Per The Fourth Period, via KK

The Devils, who need to meet payroll twice a month until the end of regular season, are considering trading team captain Zach Parise for draft picks.

Parise is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer and the team's reported financial woes could put the Devils in a tough situation as to whether they can or are even able to re-sign him.

The 27-year-old is earning a $6 million cap hit this season and his value is only expected to go up as he has posted 15 goals and 24 assists for 39 points in 47 games this season.

The Devils, who are reportedly on track to lose up to $20 million this season, currently sit in seventh place of the Eastern Conference with 54 points.

Now I wouldn't call this a Bob McKenzie quality report, but I would say that this better than that joke Eklund.  I'd certainly be ok with the Wings trading draft picks to get Parise, even a significant amount of picks.  Why?

Well he might be a rental, I think once Parise sees what it's like to be a Wing, he won't have any interest in signing somewhere else.  Sure we lost Hossa, but that was because we were simply out of money.  Generally, once a Wing, always a Wing.

And Parise has that quality to him.  That I want to win attribute.  I see him being a future Yzerman in many ways for this team, if signed.

Yet the better the Devils do, the less likely it becomes that they will trade Parise.  So from now on, root against Martin Brodeur and company.  The worse they are, the more likely we'll be seeing Zach in a Winged Wheel.

I would love to see a Parise move. Makes more sense than a Selanne move, because there is both an opportunity and desire to sign the potential rental guy in the future. While Nick Lidstrom will not possibly retire next year, let's ASSUME he take league minimum to help the team. We would have the payroll to pay BOTH Parise AND Weber/Suter next year if we trade Errorson for a low-cap hit or draft picks or either of these people.

Right now this theory makes no sense. Look at it this way:

If NJ is even close to making the playoffs, they will never get rid of a guy like this. They would stand to actually make some money off of playoff games because they can practically name an outrageous price and still fill the building. Especially if they can win a round.

Sure, they have to sell something in the off season but a playoff run could lighten their deficit.

But Parise as a Wing simply makes sense. It seems like a fantastic fit for both parties.

@magnum9 Did you read the rest of the post?

@moorecha Yes I did. It doesn't matter how bad they become, they will still be in the playoff hunt as the deadline passes by. They would have to go on a losing streak of epic proportions for it to happen.

@Reddy@moorecha I mean, it is possible, but I only see it being possible if they get something playoff worthy in return. I don't think they dump him for draft picks because it would likely shoot them in the foot for the playoffs. I guess I really don't know what a team stands to bring in profit wise in the playoffs. If it isn't much, they could very well do something with him. If they make a lot in the playoffs, they would want as many home games as possible. Which means winning.

@magnum9@moorecha I don't know, theres been rumours of a Parise trade for ages, plus he wants to be a winner and the Devils have shown no sign of becoming a real contender in recent years. Brodeur is done, they will need a switch up and why not start by dropping his cap hit and picking up some draft picks. Makes sense to me, but may still be unlikely.

In unrelated news, Johnny Toes (yes I said Toes) is injured and will be sitting out this weekends festivities in Ottawa. How much do you want to bet that Gary & Co will not give him a one game suspension like they did to TPH and Pavel in 09? You guys should do a post on this and see how much Hawk/Bettman hate we can get going, lol.

how is his value, "only going to go up." 39 points in 47 games is not worth a penny more than 6 million/cap hit a year. i just don't want to see us over pay for someone. he's borderline over payed right now as is...

@marti783 plus pavel's stats weren't a whole lot better than parise's when he was 27. they were better, but not a ton better.

@Twig yea, don't get me wrong i would LOVE to see him with us for the playoffs but i just can't see him getting paid more than 6 million a year. to be fair though, i almost never see him play.

@RedWingsRule@Twig haha hey man, no one's got more faith in kenny than i do. if anyone can get it done, it's him for sure.

@marti783 need to consider his team. playing on detroit's top line would make a big difference.

if it happened, this would be one of detroit's best trades in a decade or more. Parise will have another 10-12 years in the league. heck of a rental.

Parise would be an animal with Detroit. I think we need another player on the 1st/2nd line to spark some goals. They have been playing to the competition lately, and they should be winning in regulation more to keep away from injuries and tired bodies in general. I know Kenny Holland will do what needs to be done. LGRW

I would love to see this more than any other trade for us. This kid is good, and put with Zetts and Fil and he will be on a totally different level.

I would send Emmerton, 1st and 3rd round for him...well worth it.

I don't think we'd have the draft picks for NJ to trade Parise. Maybe we should root for them to win so when the off season comes we can sign him since they won't have the money.

gosh, too happy reading this, I can't type! "do" instead of "due!" And "Where" instead of "We". But maybe the Devils are just getting their "due" as their management is horrible while ours rules!

The irony: We have the cap space we due thanks to Brian Rafalski retiring. We did we get Raffi? Thank you Devils!

I think Parise is the guy I want to see us trade for more than any other. Especially if only for draft picks. What a steal that would be. The Wings already have ridiculous depth, imagine adding another star forward to the lineup. It would be sick.

Hopefully Kenny can talk his buddy Lou into trading him to the Wings over any other team, cause if it's just for picks there will be many calling. Anyone but the Blackhawks @JOHNxJOHN
