Coyotes vs Red Wings Recap 1.12.2012

It wasn't a blowout, but it could have been. The important thing, though is that the good guys came away with 2 points.

Jump for details:

Mursak was good tonight. He had plenty of chances, many of them he created himself with a strong fore-check.

It seems that no matter what the fourth line combination is, it gives the opposition fits. Speed, determination and depth are the reason why, in my humble opinion.

Not many looks at the power play, again. When it was on the ice, it was deadly looking.

Howard with his 100th win and Babcock with his 400th. So who gets the game puck?

Lidstrom joined the play a lot tonight. He even led one rush, which was cool. Pretty sure he's 26 years old.

Howard was flexing his knee quite a bit after that late collision. Sounds like he's okay, though: "Little bit of a Charlie Horse, but I'll be all right." That from the Red Wings twitter feed.

White had wheels tonight. Not just in OT when he had room, but even with guys around him. I'd say he was about a fourth star.

Smith was on fire tonight and as Val and Hudler learned, shooting along the ice and hoping to find a hole when he can see the puck is a sure way to help him make a save. Need to shoot high or deke him. Or both.

NOHS Favorite Moment of the Game: Mick basically confessing that the sticks he gave the Hockey Hall of Fame were not the 50 goal sticks they had requested. I love that guy.

NOHS 3 Stars:

First Star: Zetterberg. He wasn't the best player during the game, but he was the best when we needed him to be. I love it when he does that move. Smith knew he had been beat even before the puck crossed the goal line. It's almost as if he knew he'd be on the short end of a viral youtube video.

Second Star: Mursak. Yup. First NHL game since the preseason, so in reality first NHL game since last year and he was good all night. No points, but he had his chances as I mentioned earlier. Welcome back.

Third Star: Hudler. Why Hudler, who also had zero points? Because he blasted a shot from the slot when he had options to pass to guys who were in a lesser scoring position. He does that a LOT and he didn't back when he used to score 20+. So keep it up, Happy. Shoot that puck!

It sucks that the game was so close and needed a shootout, but the Wings played a strong game all night. Give Phoenix credit, they did put a lot of pressure on the puck when the Wings tried to leave their own zone, but at the end of the day, the Wings deserved the 2 points that they got.

Next game is Saturday against the Amateurs. Puck drops at 12:30 for some stupid reason. It's on NBC, which means we'll probably be stuck listening to Edzo.

Who thinks he starts the broadcast by whining about the too-many-men that wasn't called? And odds that no one brings up Chicago getting away with it twice just seconds later?

Found this great comment about Pavel Datsyuk i thought i would share:

"I'm tired of people comparing Dasyuk to God, I mean he's good but he's not Datsyuk."

I was at the game. Sak looked great out there! So good to see him back on the ice.
Zata's shootout goal: holy crap, I could not stop laughing!
Edzo can suck it. Douchetard.

Hey I know he can play till 3029, I just think becuz of him being so unselfish, if he notices him making this lil errors that all other players do normally, that he'll wanna retire before he gets worse so that I'd don't effect the team ! But I hope I'm wrong lol

I giggled like a little girl with that shootout move. Thanks Z

Further proof that the Z-man can stick handle to the max. Probably the least fancy shootout goal ever, but the tactics and determination to get out of that gorillas reach were amazing, and really fun to watch!

First Star Datsyuk, that amazing pass to Franzen thru 3 yotes defenders... Best pass I have seen all season long

I find it hilarious that Toronto called about the Ice in front of Howard for the shootout, which was then wiped, but when Detroit complain that they didn't clear in front of Smith nothing is done! It isn't possible that people in T wanted <strike>Detroit to lose</strike> Phoenix to win is it? Not that is made any difference. Zetterbergs goal was awesome!Need to start scoring first though!! Last 4 games have been with the opposition scoring first, and i think the wings suffer for it!

Every game I notice nick make one slip up sometimes 2, which he has an excuse with his age. But I think with that (like the turnover to doan) and him passin on the all star game, their signs of this really being his last year, esp if they win the cup. Which is sad but I would love to see pav have that 3 ft letter C on his chest lol. And I say they cut the puck in half lol

I love beating this team. Pav and Z were like Eurotwins again. And Filppula was very good, Franzen played a lot better than the last game and Jim Howard continues to be dependable when we have brain farts.

I thought the Miller-Helm line had way too many turnovers though, I was quite disappointed in their lack of puck-control and poor decisions at both blue lines. Thankfully, none of it came back to bite us in the ass.

I think I peed a little bit when Hank scored that goal, I can't stop watching it. Almost makes the extension of a game that should NOT have gone to a shootout worth it.

How about that shot from Emmerton when he was falling that went off the post? I love watching the Wings prospects play. Sucks the Wings had to win it in overtime, but I like the effort they put out in the first and how they kept banging away after that first Coyote goal.

@thebiglachovsky i could not believe that shot, i was like "When did Datsyuk and Emmers trade jerseys?"

Personally i think that Pavel Datsyuk was a HUGE star tonight, that pass he had on the Franzen goal was nothing short of BEAUTIFUL. I Highly doubt more than 5 players in the league could make that pass. I do not know what it is about Phoenix, but they bring out the absolute best in Pavs and i absolutely friggen love it.

@Instinctz That was an epic pass. I could tell though, in his skating and resulting loss of some pucks, that he is still struggling a little with that groin.

@Instinctz i agree. just wanted to give recognition to a few other guys this time. especially since i have not been praising them much lately.

@Twig i understand, but hell, how can you NOT praise the dude, hes amazing.

7 PP in 5 games. I don't know why tonight stuck out to me, but it felt like the zebras must have all choked on their whistles. Mick clearly felt that way too. The one that bothered me the most was Doan's leveling hit on an off-balance and defenseless Helm a full 4 seconds (went back and counted) after he was away from the puck. Let's see that happen to Crosby when (and if) he ever gets back on the ice and it isn't called. Lot's of cheap, chippy crap you would expect from PHX, but apparently they are the least penalized team in the NHL.

Sidebar to that, I got excited when I heard them talking about the Cammalleri trade rumors. He would have been a nice addition, but instead off to Calgary.

@ThroatShot Condsidering we've never had problems drawing penalties, and we still play the same style with even more speed, I just think it's an agenda from Commissioner Bettman to tone us down. 2 PP's per game with this team if flipping ridiculous.

Instinctz
Instinctz

@brendanksullivan honestly it has to be, did you see everything that Phoenix got away with last night? it was ridicolous, especially that interference on Datsyuk and the guy punching the Mule in the back of the head, and here i thought the league was cracking down on headshots.

@ThroatShot 17 power plays in our last 8 games Throat, thats a little over 2 a game.

Instinctz
Instinctz

@ThroatShot the Red Wings have been lacking Power Play oppurtunities since our first game against Chicago.

brandik1313

He'll either lead with that, or he'll talk about tonight's game and give Phoenix more credit than they deserve, probably hailing Doan as the second coming of Jeebus or something equally ridiculous.

Lemurgod
Lemurgod

@brandik1313

If he claims Doan is the second coming then Jeebus is a huge a-hole and needs to be Kronwalled back to the crypt. Oh and Bettman too...and The Edzo and Pierre...and...
