Could Selanne Be An Option?

Written by Jordan on .

selanneRWBruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun stated via Twitter (where bloggers get their news first) that the Rangers, Bruins, Sharks and Red Wings have all inquired about the availability of Teemu Selanne. Take that for what you will, as Garrioch's track record is on par with Eklund. Only he works for an actual credible newspaper and not a pay for news scam that is Hockeybuzz (I won't even link it it's that crappy).

The thought of adding Selanne, however likely or unlikely the rumor is does get the wheels turning.

Make the jump for more

1) Selanne has a no trade clause that he would have to waive if a deal were going to go down at the deadline.

2) He has stated befor that he wants to retire a Duck (pull a Modano)

3) San Jose makes the most sense as he wouldn't have to move far from his family

4) The Bruins don't seem to be a fit with their aggressive style of play

5) The Rangers? If I were Selanne I wouldn't gamble my last shot at a cup on the Rangers.

6) The Wings fit his style. They love veterans, he loves Filppula and would probably be playing on the same line. Plus the Wings have the track record that gives him the best shot at winning the cup.

Yes, Selanne is 41, but so is Lidstrom. They both seem to be drinking from the same water fountain as neither one has lost a step.

The guy has 44 points (15G, 29A) and a +7 which is good enough to lead the Ducks in scoring. All the more impressive as they have players like Perry, Getzlaf and Ryan. Don't forget that the Ducks are the 28th place team in the league.

He has 7 power play goals, something that the Wings could use to jump start their own lackluster numbers.

Did I mention that he is 41?

The brain trust is in Vegas as we speak planning their moves, and for us fans February 27th can't come soon enough. They can add a little over 14 million in salary if they made a deal today, and almost 27 million if they wait until the deadline. I wouldn't be surprised to see Kenny go all in to make sure TPH gets a fair crack at hoisting his 5th cup, but then again I wouldn't be surprised if he did nothing at all. (capgeek)

What would you give up for a player like him? 1st round pick? Roster player? Prospect? all of the above?

I dont put much value in a whiney player. The top of the West is so close and the games will only get chippier. I remember one player sitting in the lockeroom crying and whining to the media because he had just been run over by Kronner. "Hes dangerous!", Salami says. Well, so is any player in the league when youre skating with your head down or between your legs looking for your manhood. I have yet to hear a single WING complain about being checked hard. Ask Homer! They take it and leave it on the ice. Numbers or not, Salami doesnt deserve the Winged Wheel on his chest. Leave him at Disneyland!

@WingNut83 I dunno, a few times Franzen has said things which could have been considered whiney.

@moorecha Well I must have missed that one. Franzen is the token whiner then, we dont need another one.

Detroit has more than enough depth already to give up a couple of draft picks, so I wouldn't mind giving up some prospective talent in the next couple of years. I wouldn't like us to give away any of our talent, but adding Selanne for the cup run this year would be a brilliant idea, I think. We have Lidstrom, but the "veteran" presence that was there in the 2008 cup run just doesn't exist this season. Adding an experienced forward that has proven to be a powerhouse in the playoffs might be just what we need to carry this season's momentum through the playoffs.

salami in Detroit, just doesn't seem natural.............I don't think we should give up anyone of quality. Can't sell out the future. No way..........I like what the team we have now. Besides, we need the cap space to nab Shea Weber. That's who I have my eye on......

Since the consensus seems to be giving up no one for the Finnish flash... Who sits? Especially once Eaves gets better?

@D.M.N I would definitely sit Emmerton, actually if there was a player to give up for him, I would give up Emmerton. He's a decent player but I'm not really impressed by his play. And to tell you the truth, I would rather have Nyquist in the line up instead of him.

Selanne - Zetts - Filppula would be a killer line!

Honestly, I don't think Anaheim will ask for a lot, and teams won't give up a lot for a rental player. They'll try to get as much as possible but I don't think they'll get that much. But I'll be happy to give them a draft pick or two for him. I think we have enough upcoming prospects that'll sustain us for a while that we don't have to worry about drafting in high rounds for a season. And there are going to be many FA's that'll want to sign with us in the next few years.

So I say do it; but do it for draft picks. Not prospects or players.

@RedWingsRule I rekon it'll take at least one prospect, which I wouldn't mind giving them as long as it's not Smith or Pulkinen (sp?)

@Reddy Like I said in the post above, I would give up Emmerton....and I would throw in a draft pick too.

Fuck no. Hudler has great hands and hockey sense, he can pass good and shoot real well too. He's one of our best shootout guys his last few seasons in detroit which is big. And he's still jus entering his prime. No way I'd lose all that for selanne even if he did play next year. It won't happen anyways though their playing better and he's a team guy that will wanna help them in this Devils like run their attempting ..

This is completely unrelated, it didn't seem right posting this on his B-day post. By no means am I suggesting trading Helm, but is it just me or has he seemed a bit quiet this year?

Instinctz

@Tnhgeno is there anyway to pretend this guy did not just say we should trade the Namesake? do i really need to post the youtube video of the 1 man penalty kill?

@Instinctz Apparently I didn't make myself clear when stating, "By no means am I suggesting trading Helm"

@Tnhgeno Sarcasm, learn it love it. my point was this, i was pointing out the 1 minute penalty kill. what is required for an effective penalty kill? defensive skill. that is why we like the Namesake, he is a grinder.

@Tnhgeno Quiet offensively yes. That's not what we pay him for though.

I didn't realize that so many people would be against this. I think a Selanne trade reeks of Kenny Holland and all of you are undervaluing the skill he has.

Old or not Selanne is still an elite player in this league and I think he would instantly upgrade our team.

I highly doubt Hudler is going anywhere. Emmerton, Mursak, Kindl, Eaves, Miller, even Ericsson are all established and have all had the opportunity to be schooled in the Wings system. Just because they aren't huge contributors for us doesn't mean they can't be on the Ducks

ThroatShot
ThroatShot

@Jordan_Reis I actually don't think this reeks of Kenny Holland. He isn't big on the rental market, especially if you have to give up a lot. Maybe a rental of Weber or Suter to both help and get first shot at signing them, but I just can't see him dropping anyone currently on the team for a guy this old to be on our second-ish line.I see a Kenny move coming but hopefully not Selanne. He has great skills and experience, but he is not going to make a big impact on our team in getting us a Cup. This is too short-sighted with not enough upside for the future.

Reddy
Reddy like.author.displayName 1 Like

@ThroatShot I think so much of what has been done this/last year has been long-sighted that a move like this is very plausible. It gives an already stacked team another marquee player who wants to go cup or broke in his last year (presumably). Been done lots of times with various levels of success (Brett Hull, Modano). We knew Hossa was a rental but he sure helped out, reg season anyway. I wouldn't put this past KH yet.

Jordan_Reis
Jordan_Reis

I honestly think that a rental is what Kenny will go for, that way they can go for broke and if it doesn't work out he isn't tied to that deal come July 1st when he can make a run at both Suter and Parise @Reddy @ThroatShot

Jordan_Reis
Jordan_Reis like.author.displayName 1 Like

Tomas Sandstrom, Wendel Clark, Bill Ranford, Todd Bertuzzi, Cory Cross all rentals all done by KH

Kenny may not like a rental at a high price, but hes not against it @ThroatShot

If anyone I see it being Hudler, I don't like it though. I wouldn't do it though, the Finnish Flash is Finished.

Hell yes. Anaheim already said they want established nhl players. Id say the most likely candidate for trade is hudler which would break my heart, but id still take it.

Please no...

I wouldn't mind signing him as an FA, but it scares me to think what we would have to give up to get him. All of the above is my answer, unless the Ducks think long term and want some prospects, but tbh I like our prospects and our lineup, hands off!

Jordan_Reis
Jordan_Reis

I'd love to get him as a FA, but I'm fairly confident that at 42 years old (which he will be on July 3rd) this is probably his last run at the cup. If he plans on coming back he probably wont want to leave the Ducks. He has a 4 mil cap hit and if the Ducks are wanting to dump salary, add prospects and youngsters It probably wouldn't take a whole lot. Maybe a 1st round pick or Kindl and a 3rd @Reddy
