Blues vs. Red Wings Recap 1.23.2012

Great 3-1 win tonight by the good guys. Blues fans will pat themselves on the back for backing a team that fights, and we'll celebrate another win. It's great to be us.

Jump for the full recap:
Seemed to me that our guys weren't finishing their checks in the first. Helm did, Stuart did, but other guys were passing up the chance to lay a hit. I think hits were about even after the first, but I disagree with those numbers. Team needed to match the Blues' physical play. They did in the second. Helm continued to lead the way and the rest of the team followed.

Helm seemed to have a chip on his shoulder. Mad that Drew forgot his birthday? I think so. He's also mentally tough. I know we toss that phrase around a lot, but when a guy is draped all over you and taking liberties with you, it's hard to not swing back. He did the same thing last year with Jovanovski, though he didn't draw a penalty. Some call it spineless; I call is mentally tough. His Stanley Cup ring agrees with me.

Only goal against was the result of a bad line change. Three Blues were able to skate in on one defender and bury it. I don't know about you, but seeing a guy get his second goal of the year on our team stings a bit.

Homer approaching game 1,000 in a Detroit uniform. Which means he's probably been cross-checked 35,000 times.

Jackman is a neanderthal.

Power play came around tonight. If they keep making teams pay on the power play, they won't need an enforcer. Let the scoreboard do the talking.

Howard is a beast. Anyone wearing blue was getting decked in that scrum. I could live to be 100 and I probably won't find a Red Wings goalie I'll like more.

NOHS Favorite Moment of the Game: No question, Mike Babcock telling Pierre to get out of his face. "If I could finish talking to you and get back to doing my job we can go to it." Babs has always been a bit short with Pierre, but this time he didn't hold back. I'd be surprised if Pierre asks him another question in the middle of a game.

The Production Line caught a few spelling fails by NBC. I can understand getting Abdelkader wrong, but the guy you followed around for 36 hours? The best defenseman in NHL history? So pathetic:

lindstrom

NOHS Three Stars of the Game:

First Star: Jim Howard. Only one goal against tonight. A few great saves and once again proved to be the team enforcer.

Second Star: Pavel Datsyuk: Goal and an Assist tonight, plus some great hits. If Pavel is hitting, everyone has to hit. The team responded and they got the win.

Third Star: Mule. Great goal in front of the net. He also took quite a few cheap shots, but didn't retaliate.

So, do you all hate the Blues yet? What a bunch of hacks. Who did you like tonight? Who did you hate?

Next game is Wednesday in Montreal. Red Wings, if you're listening, please don't play down to these guys. Win by 7. Puck drops at 7:30 EST. See you then.

II thought the game was great after that Douche Canoe interview. For questioning the wings as cup contenders NBC analysts were asked again when they started wrecking the Blues. That is the way I like to see Detroit play. Howard is one I have liked just knowing he was developed by Detroit and when he started swinging and defending himself it made me like him even more.

The blue paint is Howard's child and he will protect it by any means. I think that players will start getting the message about taking liberties with goalies if they start getting the blocker to the head.

WTF is up with DoucheStewart white-knighting for Pietrangelo? From various recaps: "He's one of the guys on our team that you have to protect," Stewart said of Pietrangelo. I have no problem doing that. That's something that comes first nature."

Pietrangelo didn't seem to have a problem with Stu's hit. Of course, he had the Wings all over him all night, but still...

I think I hate these asshats as much as I hate the Schmucks. Frickin idjits.

@marti783 I watch the TSN/NBC feed and he did and it was pure gold! One of my favorite moments thus far. That was full of awesomeness. You need to see Babcocks face too, you can tell from the start that he is disgusted with Pierre. lol awesome!!!

the blues seem to have an attitude that says, "hey, only we're allowed to hit. waaahh. if you hit us we're gonna fight you. waahh" (said in a crying baby voice)

This game made me feel all warm inside, especially when Howard started swinging.

The Lindstrom thing is bad, but I feel for the guy that made the mistake as I do live graphics for a living and know the stress that comes with live television. No doubt he got yelled at for that.

-Just when I think I couldn't like the above statement more, you go and say something like this...

"NOHS Favorite Moment of the Game: No question, Mike Babcock telling Pierre to get out of his face. "If I could finish talking to you and get back to doing my job we can go to it." The blues did meltdown, and it was very similar to a spoiled little kids temper tantrum: "NO FAIR, YOU'RE BETTER THAN WE ARE! MOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMM!!!" Kudos to Helm for not breaking under the pressure of being throttled for thirty seconds (he must be a good swimmer to hold his breath like that under such pressure), but what the F***, a minor for roughing? Then there is Halak's sore ass slapping the puck at the Kronwall goal party, proving even more that the blues are spoiled little bitches, who need an ass whooping. And of course, Burt getting humped by that little dog by the benches when he tied up the puck. Burt goes to the box? "Holy Jumpin". Anyhow, this game was awesome. Thanks guys for winning in reg, my butt salutes you and so does my couch... eh? Oh, previous post explains it.

Really good game, very proud of them after that. Mentally tough is right, it draws the penalty rather than getting both of you sent off. I do enjoy watching the Blues break down into a tantrum, though guys like Stewart (not Stuart) act like giant toddlers anyway. This retaliating after clean hits really pisses me off and I'm glad we burned em twice for it.

E had some bad giveaways, one of which Micky R remarked on (yep I watched FSD, no NBC for me!). Cleary needs to learn to shoot, or just pass because his constant crappy wrist shots straight to the goalie are getting very frustrating. Likewise White and Stuarts slappers into peoples shins. That aside Howard was outstanding. Everyone else was awesome too. Big stick tap to the namesake, he was hitting everything that moved and creating some really good chances, that whole line was great.

Awesome game tonight! These dumbass! Lindstrom! Really! Wow! You really misspelled his name, C'mon Man!

I will miss Lidstrom when he decides to hang them up in 2052; but I will also miss Homer. He is awesome and there will be a void when he hangs them up! That screen tonight was amazing. And after all these years of taking abuse over and over again, these douche bag refs can't give him any slack? Like come on, I can understand allow a defender to cross check once, twice or even three times. But when he's on the ice and these hack continue to pummel him that's a bit to far. But hey what can you do, I have the utmost respect for him.

I just laugh every time that he's in his office and theres a goal, he doesn't immediately celebrate with his teammates; oh no he looks at the ref waiting for them to call off the goal. lol.

I know I sound like a broken record, but E made me angry. It seemed like Ericsson was back to his failing ways. I think his problem was that he is trying to be like Kronwall. Kronner jumps in as Forward #4 a lot, maybe too much for that matter. But Ericsson doesn’t have the offensive skill of Kronwall. He needs to let his defensive zone game solidify before he gets that aggressive. While I do recognize that picks hitting him have resulted a couple of assists, he needs to lay off the offensive zone aggressiveness. A lot of bad breakout passes and turnovers. This game was a regression for him in my mind. In the Parise thread, some commented that they don't think he is worth $6m or more. Maybe in yesterday's market, but with guys like Ericsson getting almost $4m Parise has to justify $7m. He's young and skilled with little support.

Helm got their PP goal by playing hard and drawing a penalty from an undisciplined tool. Helm was flying and hitting hard. On that note, I like that (and it actually has been recognized by "unbiased" announcers on national broadcasts) the Red Wings hit hard, hit a lot, and hit legal. Aside young-un Smith in the preseason, notice how all the Wings hits are hard but right where they should be. Our team made me so proud to watch in periods 2-3 tonight. Blues are a gritty, grinding team to play against with a defensive mindset, so coming back from an early goal was meaningful.

+ Helm

- Ericsson

Best moment was definitely the Babbles smackdown on DC.

@ThroatShot my biggest issue with E tonight was when the score was still 2-1 late in the third and he got burned BAD by a guy he should have been able to stand up. other than that, i didn't think he was too bad. he's better with commie for sure.

ThroatShot

@Twig There was a shift in the 3rd Period I believe when Filpulla was wide open in the slot. Cleary had the puck in the corner and sent a perfect pass to him. But no, as the puck is en route you see E52 blazing into the frame, knock down the pass, and then watch the 2-on-1 go the other way right through where he should have been standing at the point.

reecardoraul
reecardoraul

@Twig@ThroatShot He had a bad giveaway in the 1st in our zone, a blind backhand from the corner that luckily they didn't capitalize. When Stuart was out for the fighting major, it was E52 on the mucked change. Luckily, Howie was Amazing, yes, with a capital A.

Favorite moment was probably the brutal miss by Datsyuk into the boards. Nothing said "Finish em all!" louder then that.

Reddy

@Twig Hmm, I'm not sure dude he was pretty bad that game. Better with Commie for sure but then anything is better than how he was playing before. Admittedly I did notice him less than usual so that's probably a good thing.

Watched on FOX as I can't stand those NBC goons, but I'm kinda sad I missed Babs jabbing at Pierre. Some great lines from Mickey tonight though. Lindstom......really?!?!?

These games are so important to me sinve I live 10 mins from st louis. All my friends on my hockey team are blues fans. Most band wagoners of oshie, some true smart fans. 2 said the blues deserved to lose tonight n the penaltys they took were a joke and dumb of them. The rest said we pay the refs lol. I seriously about lost 3 friends tonight just cuz I said the blues should acquire crosby cuz he likes to cry too when he loses. N the key to beating the blues is hitting petrangelo cuz then they'll take dumb penalties. So now 1 wants to fight me lol so blues like

Crosby needs to come back so Howard can facewash him again.

I loved Franzen's goal when he shouldered and dropped what's his face in front of the net to get some space. He basically told him "Get off me little boy!" Also liked Jimmah getting scrapping with that douche Backes. There is a reason why he is currently the best goalie in the league: he takes ownership of his crease whether it is a put or an idiot in a wrong colored jersey/

I loved the fact that you could basically watch the Blues lose their composure and control. They knew the Red Wings had them beat, so what do they do? They start acting like Anaheim, getting snarly and trying to fight and just hit whoever was near them, and that lack of focus is what cost them the game. Like we've seen time and time again, the Red Wings just put their nose to the grindstone and went to work, playing calm and collected and let the Blues bury themselves. I loved Helm being a wrecking ball out there, and Howie throwing down at the end of the game was the icing on the cake.
