Yzerman Back Wearing the Winged Wheel...
Well gang, we all know by now that Detroit’s not only hosting the Winter Classic, but also will be having a plethora of other games to go along with it.
One of which is an alumni game, which can only mean one thing:
Mr. Yzerman will don the Winged Wheel once again.

I mean, he’s got to right? Sure, there’d be a bit of a conflict of interest, being that he’s the GM of the Lightning, but he’s the “The Captain” first and a Wing at heart.
Helene St. James explained that the Wings have talked to Brendan Shanahan about playing. He “told them he'd put the screws on Steve Yzerman to come, too.” That’s a good start Shanny and we’d love to have the Irishman play. He’s forever a Red Wing.
Other Wings have already committed. Kris Draper and Kirk Maltby are in. I’m sure McCarty would be in as well (if he can get the time off his job on Pawn Stars of course) to get the Grind Line back together once more.
I’m sure Osgood will be in net for Detroit. I’d love to see Mickey out there with his wood stick, I’m sure if his health allows it, he’ll lace ‘em up.
Other possibilities: Igor Larionov, Rafalski, Dino Ciccarelli, Mike Vernon, Brett Hull, Ray Sheppard, and the crazy Mr. Hasek, who might still be playing over in Russia.
You know someone I bet we won’t see? Sergei Fedorov. Something tells me he won’t let bygones be bygones and let it go.

I would love to see Jiri Fischer get a few shifts. His career was cut way too short
Oh and can we snag Wendel Clark since he played a few with us? That'd make to Leafs faithful piss themselves, wouldn't it?

The Russian 5 + Brownov. That'd be cool. I know, I know, it's impossible, but it'd be cool. Also, is Murph gonna play? Kind of a dick move if we don't ask him to being he still works for us in the booth. Plus it's only fitting that Toronto doesn't ask him to play.
Dom and Ozzie back in net would be great, I'm okay if Vernie doesn't make it because he was with us so briefly.
With all this stuff to think about.... today has not been, and will not be, very productive at all.
Is Ozzie going? I'd love to see him do some slap-stick on the ice, talkin' to himself and all. Shan the man has to go if Stevie goes. Grindline has to get back together. Why not throw in the 'legends' like Howe and Lindsay? I tell you, this will be a Winter Classic to remember FOREVER.
I might start to tear up if I saw Steve don the winged wheel again and play in the alumni game.
If -hypothetically- Lidstrom retires at the end of this year (which he won't, he still thinks he's in his 20's) i'm guessing he'd be elligible for the alumni game? If so, that would guarantee him playing in 2013 for at least a game!
Not thats he's going to leave... ever...
@moorecha apologies for the upset, but unfortunately its going to happen (obviously not for a decade or so). I am just merely saying that if god forbid it did happen, there would always be that silver lining.

If Howe skated one last time, I assure you the Big House will be deafening. There is such a rich history of Detroit hockey, it's so hard to narrow down who would be the best to see. So many great players, so much depth, I have a feeling this will be the best Winter Classic yet.

This has the potential to be an amazing game. There are so many former Wings still around that any roster would leave off some who deserve to wear the Winged Wheel again. That said....i'd love to see:
The Captain's Line: Yzerman, Shanahan, Kocur
Grind Line: Draper, Maltby, McCarty
Legends Line: Marcel Dionne, John Ogrodnick, Mickey Redmond
Fourth Line: Larionov, Doug Brown, Dallas Drake
Defense: Mark Howe, Paul Coffey, Rafalski, Chelios, Larry Murphy, Reed Larson
Goal: Osgood and Vernon
Bowman to coach.
This would put 7 hall of famers, and three former captains on the ice.
I know Coffey is less likely. But we don't have a lot of alumni defensemen i'd like to see. Can Fischer play a game?

I'm more excited about this than the WC game itself. I'd love to see everyone you mentioned, plus Murph and Gordie.

I'm honestly looking forward to this game as much as the actual Winter Classic game itself. To bad Mr. Hockey is suffering from dementia, it would be cool to see him don the skates one last time, if only for a shift.
@thebiglachovsky That might not be out of the question...I'm not sure how far into it he is.
