Pour Me Some Whiskey: Our Season is Over
Written by Ryan on .

It always sucks to lose the last game of the season. Losing to a team we all thought we could beat makes it worse.
There's a drink online called the Detroit Red Wing. 6oz of Vernors and 2 shots of cinnamon schnapps. It's... decent. But I want something stronger tonight. In the book 'Hockey Gods' the author mentions a drink people order in Sweden called 'Red Wing #5'. I don't remember the ingredients, so I'll wing it, as any good bartender should.
1oz of vodka
another 1oz of vodka
a third oz of vodka.
pour over ice in a rocks glass.
add 5oz of Faygo Rock and Rye.
And that's that.
What are you drinking tonight?
Mickey said it best when he said it just wasn't in the cards. Nashville played hard and got breaks. Some of the Wings played hard and got no breaks. It happens.
Season recap is coming.

I also wonder, if we can trade Mike Babcock for Todd McLellan. Todd 'knows the system' and he pretty much exhausted it all at SJ, just like Babs has at Detroit.
Todd McLellan looks like a strip club doorman. At least babcock doesn't live in pin-stripes and actually looks like he could see over his belly.
i think we need to get bigger and stronger. we have great young talent and they should provide the skill and speed we need and expect in the coming years but as far as people like cleary and hudler, i wouldn't mind trading those guys to get bigger. i'm sick of seeing players like that get pushed off the puck all the time. franzen for sure needs to be trade bate. he's got a low cap hit which should make him attractive. our defense is up in the air with stuart and lidstrom so who knows how our defense will look next year.
@marti783 Bigger/Stronger is exactly what SJ wanted last offseason. Didn't work out for them, they had a crappier finish than us. Our defense was very good this year, but it could be better and we don't need to beef up to get it where it needs to be. I say we focus more on defensive accountability (i.e. new ass't coaches) and sharpen that scoring to a more consistent threat.
@brendanksullivan First off, SJ and us are two totally different teams. What didn't work for them has no impact on what can work for us. Second, our defense was over rated this year. We usually gave up quite a few quality scoring chances all year but were bailed out by an all-star goalie. Lastly, I love how everyone keeps saying we need to increase goal scoring. Don't you think the other 29 teams say that?? Of course you want to increase goal scoring, that goes without saying. The fact is, when the games are run and gun, we're just fine. When the games are 2-1, we lose. We need to find a way to build a team that can win both.
And I do think Lidstrom will return but I am on the fence about Homer. Though I love Homer and love seeing him in his office.
Agreed. Not ready for the Wings season to be over. Tried the new Bud Light Platinum. Did the job and numbed the pain. Changes should have been made. Brendan Smith and Chris Connor should have been in. I think Stuart will head West to be closer to wife and kids, which is great for him but unfortunate for us.
This team just didn't have "it" tonight or the latter part of the season for that matter. If we come in to the next season with basically the same team, especially in the Top 6 up front, I will be seriously disappointed. I can be a "true" Wings fan and want to see some underperforming players moved, yes? Well, Franzen, Hudler, Quincey, Kindl, Emmerton, Cleary, and Mursak need to aggressively become trade bait for whatever amount of time they are still under contract with us. We must bring in a sizeable forward or two who can consistently score and give 100% effort. That will not come cheap. Do some of those guys have potential or value? Yes, but Washington isn't going to give us Ovechkin for a 1st and 3rd Rounder (just a random example).
I think Babcock has been sliding downhill in his decision-making and ability to control this team for a couple years. One example I would proffer for you is his pre-game analysis that the reason why they were losing the series to that point was the Bottom 6 scoring comparison between the teams. We don't need more depth, Mike. We need some Top 6 guys(s) who can consistently score goals. That was our problem in the series- goals. IMO we need to try someone new next season behind the bench.
@ThroatShot True on all ends except for Babs' "depth" comment. I think we're all looking a bit too deeply into that one. Pav, Z, Mule and maybe Fil and Huds are our primary scorers. Bert and the 3rd/4th liners, plus the D, I'd count as secondary (and tertiary, depending on the players) scoring. I think Babs was referring to that. Their D stepped up and was HUGE in the series.
Anyway, let's judge Babs by his results and not a comment or two. His results are 3 years of nothing beyond the second round. Not good enough? Of course not, but he had little to no personnel improvements over the years so I take that into account to.
@brendanksullivan @ThroatShot You're right about their D, detroit zone entry was shut down and boxed out nearly every time.
@drw91 @ThroatShot While that turned things, it's a sad state of affairs for a team when their success rises or falls on the 3rd Line center...
@ThroatShot I agree with getting rid of Franzen and Hudler. They are inconsistent, except Franzen is consistently lazy. They don't seem to have any chemistry with their other 2 linemates.
My thought is this: a lot of teams are putting 2 skilled players together alongside a grinder with decent hands. Examples - Stamkos, St. Louis, Downie (pre-trade). Giroux, Jagr, Hartnell. This has clearly worked. So in my opinion - we put Datsyuk, Nyquist, and (choose one) Miller, Cleary, Eaves, Mursak, Abdelkader, together. And then do the same on the 2nd line with Z and Fil.
3rd line Tuzzi and Helm, and fill the rest in with the previously mentioned players.
In my mind, it sounds like a good idea, but who knows, I'm not an NHL coach.
@Tnhgeno @ThroatShot I actually think you're on to something there. I player to help take attention away from the skill guys so they can do their thing.
@Reddy @ThroatShot I would love to see Eaves alongside Pav and Nyquist. Just to see if it works. Eaves proved that he can put up goals when he was in Ottawa, he has a hell of a shot, hes got speed, decent hands, gets into the corners, and hes a right handed shot, which is a rarity.
@ThroatShot Not sure about Hudler but everyone else you mention definitely. This team has too many role players and not enough stars. Though we arguably just got beat by a team of only role players and a decent goalie.
Something to look forward to: Happy Hudler summer vacation photos! Could you please make them embiggenable?
Black Velvet and 7, going Canadian tonight. It's time for Homer to ride off into the sunset. We have the (younger) forwards to replace him and cap space to fill Stuart's void if need be. Down, but certainly not out in Cali.
Im a beer girl. I drink so much more during the playoffs than I do for the 82 regular season games. I am supposed to be up in 4 hours... for a 12hr class on food service sanitation. Tomorrow is going to be one hell of a long ass day. I absolutely HATE the fact that the Wings season is over. It hurts ny heart.
Taking a drive, listening to some Deftones, then back home to have some Jack n Cokes. Then going to bed
Hulder needs to leave are you blind? what the fuck? he scored more than other guys this season and you want to send him packing. get the fuck on. if you are a true wings fan you know that the mule and huldler need to stay!!!! get the fuck off bandwagon fans! Wings for life
There is no bandwagon so how can there be bandwagon fans. If we sucked for years and were suddenly good and everyone from detroit suddenly loved the team THEN there would be a bandwagon. example - Chicago 2010.
@wallace I don't see how you can call anyone a "bandwagon" fan who is wanting personnel changes to a lineup that has remained fairly static for several years and proven over that time the 1st or 2nd Round of the playoffs is as far as they can go.
To quote Einstein, "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results."
I thought the same, but hudlers spot will got to a much better forward. Probably someone who can't so easily be physically dominated.
Miller Lite tonight. Thank you hockey town for an amazing season. I was theere for the 21st straight win at the JOE! and I will be there for the winter classic! it was an amazing season. Til next year hockeytown. LGRW.
Drinking Miller Lite, Hockey Beer for Hockeytown... and euchre for the night... soooo disappointed, but oh well shit happens. Just praying for one more year of #5, one more chance at a 5th cup for Nick. Please Nick, I know you read NOHS, please come back for one more year!
Does everyone here have the same mindset as those over at WIIM about Stuart? They all can't seem to wait until his bags are packed, whereas I'm still holding out hope that Wings resign him. What does everyone here think?
He's a great defensemen that always seemed to break down at the exact moment I was looking for someone to blame in a series. Hola!(that means goodbye as well too right?)
This is how I feel about Stuart, the man is a great defenseman, but he hasn't been all there this season. It's not really noticeable but something is....off about him. I don't want to kick him to the curb, but the man has to put his family first and the hard decision he has waiting for him has been affecting his play. I honestly would like to see him traded to a west coast team during the draft for some picks.
@JOHNxJOHN his mind certainly wasn't there, I can hardly blame him for that (family always comes first). Wings could have traded him at the deadline. Now, I believe, he'll just leave as a free agent. No longer can 'trade' Stuart.
@JOHNxJOHN His shots into peoples shins that bounce out the zone have pissed me off all year. He's made some great goal-line saves but if he was doing his job right I'm not sure he would have needed to, I dunno.
