Frustrated
Written by Ryan on .

Detroit started well, but some major hiccups in the third cost them the game. Really frustrating. Rinne is a great goalie, but he was not tested very much tonight. Very frustrating.
Frustratingly frustrating:
Forgive me, friends, but I just can't give you the recap you deserve right now. A little bummed. Tomorrow morning I'll post my thoughts and get you all fired up for the comeback.
Use this thread to vent.
Friday. I dare you to doubt.
LGRW
Short cycles of the puck, especially when dealing with bigger players. weaving in and out opens lanes because bigger slower players tend increase the gap and leave the stick to take up that space, the skater that just had the puck now trips on the stick and a whistle is blown. next 5/5 shift I'll bet theres even more space for fear of another penalty. It starts with cyling the puck in out and around the dots. Moving feet get tripped, create space, and confuse the vision and balance of defenders. I dont care how big and physical you are, if your vision and balance are thrown off, youre a pylon. REDWINGS IN 7! BELIEVE THAT!
I MISS EAVES & HELM!!!!!
Is it time maybe to give some of our Black Aces a shot? I'm actually only really thinking of Boy Wonder & The Rifleman. Also? Move Goose up to Pav's line. Those 2 had some great chemistry together.
COME ON, WINGS!! YOU CAN DO THIS!!! You just have to WANT to. *sigh*
Babcock contributed to the loss tonight, NO DOUBT, with crappy line combinations. I wouldn't even consider firing the guy though, that's just crazy talk. Any yes, changes need to happen. I'm sick of being out skated and out muscled by teams like Nashville, San Jose, etc. We need to get bigger and stronger and if that means losing some offense then so be it.
@marti783 We can't afford to lose offence, we only scored once this game. We need some gritty skill.
@Reddy You have to be able to win low scoring games in the playoffs. Right now, we can't.
I agree Babcock is a great coach, and for the most part, our boys played well out there. I think the score would've been far into Detroit's favor if we had someone camped out to bang in the rebounds, and also we still need more dominance on the power play. We're down in their zone and definitely holding it there for some chances, but just not good enough ones. They need the tic-tac-toe chemistry again. I was a little pissed at the goal gave up, where three of us went after one of them, and Howard followed them all to the corner like a bird dog. In one glance I get it, because guess who came up with that puck even with three guys on him? Yeah he passed it, but if Howard hadn't bird-dogged it, taking the late guy, it would've been in the net from that angle. Damned if you do and if you don't situation for him, just shouldn't have had three friggin guys on their one. Anyhow, we've seen Detroit do this before in the playoffs. We've seen them come back and win a series when they were down and out. We've seen them drop out as well. I'm not holding my breath for the big win, but I'm sure hoping to see some great plays, maybe another Kronwalling, and a Datsyukian deke before it's over for this year. I know we are the better team, whether Nashville beats us or not. I'm definitely a believer in the ideology that the playoffs are semi-rigged as far as games go, and don't get me started on Detroit penalities, even though their PK has become fantastic; it HAS TO BE!. P.S. Didn't Zetterberg tag Weber in the eye with his stick? Oops...eye for an eye Weber.
@Lemurgod Is it wrong that I laughed long & hard when Z got Weber? Too bad he didn't bleed, the mangy bastard.
Babcock is not the problem, you're an idiot if you think replacing the coach will change things. It actually doesn't matter if you believe he should be fired because it's not going to happen, he will be the coach for the forseeable future.
The team is good, the series isn't over yet. Will there be some player changes next year? Yeah probably, maybe a signing or trade. The hockey operations team will figure that out, they will make the best decisions for the short and long-term.
I can assure you that there will be no knee-jerk reaction, no major trade to "shake things up" and no rebuild of any kind.
Teams that make changes for the sake of making changes end up out of the playoffs with a pile of terrible contracts (see: The Leafs, Habs, Sabres, Blue Jackets, Flames)
It wasn't luck, it wasn't refs, and it wasn't Rinne. We more than matched them for two periods and then basic, obvious mistakes cost us goals. I have never ever seen anything like that gwg. Three guys and a goalie all after one man, plain stupid. Nashville didn't make these mistakes, they won.
Theres nothing major about the organization that needs changed, we don't need to trade players, or any of that bullshit, because it's all bullshit. They proved they can actually play, it was just stupid mistakes that they suddenly made and the other team didn't.
Yes the crowd sucked, to paraphrase gladiator, you must earn the crowd.

I'm not mad at the wings, just disappointed the way things have turned out. We outshot them 41-17 and lose like this. I have a hard time putting fault on any single player. F Rinne has taken the concept of playoff hockey to heart.
Amazing how without our 3rd line center showing the rest of the team what heart is they fall to pieces but 1 shitty goal is hardly reason to blame Howie, without him in net we go down by a lot more then that....defenders don't seem to know what they're doing and the offense seem to think it'll be funny to go into hibernation till October (if they wake up then), Offseason should be interesting
I agree. Wings fans have every reason to doubt the team. The way they've played lately there hasn't been any reason to believe. There is no depth, hell I say put Conks in and maybe he can pull off a win. At least he won't leave the net WIDE OPEN and give up a goal on a rookie mistake like Howard did tonight...
I doubt em idc. I do it becuz I know Babs won't change the lines. It'll still be the same with banged up guys on each line. Bert or cleary slowing pav down like always. If hank and pav aint on the same line then its over, the end. Fuck nashville too.

I have to say that the wings fans are just as disappointing as this team. Most of the 55 comments below (a lot of comments for this blog) are "Holland better do something this summer" "I can't believe the Wings suck!" and so on. Are we really going to give up on our team that quickly? This is a professional sport, and we're battling at the hardest point in the entire season. By my book, the Wings played a brilliant game.
I will say I was disappointed with the result. But, I will not give up on my team. I think it was this blog that said this: "The only team that can beat Detroit is: Detroit." I still feel that way. I honestly don't think we've seen the Wheel fly yet. Sure, we've had a few high shot count games, but they're weak shots.
I actually believe that this team can battle back and beat Trashville. But based on the comments below, the fans have given up on the Wings. Sure, our fan base knows a lot about hockey, which we often think entitles us to criticism. But damn you if you think summers coming Friday. Damn you if you give up on Lids, Babs, Dangles, Z, Mule. We have an incredible team, and I might argue that Friday we'll see that team for the first time.
I don't want shit fans. I want fans that believe. I want fans support. Not all the bull shit I'm reading here.
@ShaneRozeveld i fairness, no one turned on the wings "quickly." this has been building for a couple months now. they could win still, sure. but they'll have to make some big adjustments for game 5, starting with a little heart.
@Twig @ShaneRozeveld Most of the 55 comments were out of pure frustration from last night, too. I thought the Wings played great in the first two periods, but they turned sloppy in the third. We have the ability to beat this team and score more than 1-2 goals per game. It feels like the team has been getting frustrated by Rinne and his defense stopping/blocking/clearing everything. They need Lidstrom to go out there and score a big goal to spark some life into them.
I still have faith in this team and i think they can still pull it off. They just need to dig deeper. I will never bad mouth my team like im ditching them, they might have crappy games, but what team doesnt?
They need Helm badly, one man doesnt make a team but they sure as hell help. So what they dont get bounces and garbage goals, just means they win for skill.
For the person that made the Goalie 101 or whatever comment, are you a goalie in the NHL? No? thought so. Players make mistakes, no one is perfect, if that were the case they would never lose.
I still think this team has it in them and i will be cheering them on.
Oh forgot to say, i agree with you sir. We dont need or want bandwagon fans. If that were the case, we would be no better than Chicago, and we are better than them.
Did a Wings fan piss on Lord Stanley's grave? Thats the only question I can ask myself after tonight's game. Nothing, and I mean nothing, can help me understand what I just watched...
Howard...wtf dude... I mean wtf. How you can be out of your net that far on 1 guy who is covered by 3 guys and has NO ANGLE to shoot is a mystery to me. Oh and please re-take goalie 101 which teaches you how to hug a goal post to prevent garbage from getting in. Thanks
There is no justice in this loss. The refs were ON OUR SIDE for once and we still lost. The entire game was just a little thing called "luck" which was waved in our face and stripped away from us with our dignity.
Just put me out of my misery already, please. I will have no sanity left after I keep replaying tonight's game in my head over and over until friday......
@Buckeye_Wings_Fan I think we're still paying for Drapers kid shitting in the Cup.
@thebiglachovsky Im afraid youre right.......... but you would think betman and crosby spooning it in bed would be worse....right?
@Lauren H @Buckeye_Wings_Fan @thebiglachovsky
You would be correct! That is worse.
@Buckeye_Wings_Fan @thebiglachovsky Well...if your theory is right and it's worse, then I guess being down 3-0 to the Flyers and getting 3? players suspended does seem worse.
Quite simply what is losing us this series is this.
Luck.
Detroit has None.
no lucky bounces, no garbage goals. nothing.
Nashville? Lucky Bounces everywhere, garbage goals? that seems to be the only other type they get.
Detroit is Outplaying Nashville in almost every aspect of the game.
Detroit Dominated Game 1. Lost on Lucky Bounces.
Detroit Dominated Game 3. and Lost.
Detroit Dominated Tonight. and Lost.
@Instinctz I hate to say this, but luck in a hockey game really isn't about crazy bounces.... those are rare.
In hockey, you manufacture luck by playing great.
We have been touting how Detroit outshoots opponents and dominates in puck possession for years. All Detroit does is play an outside game where they try to sneak shots in. They have no net presence since Bettman emasculated Holmstrom and Detroit has NO pure goal scorer since Hossa left.
There is little hope in the strategy. Yes, you are going to win a majority of the regular season games when you outshoot an opponent, but when it comes to the playoffs against a team that rarely gives up more than 2 goals a game, and all of your shots are from the perimeter, your screwed.
Not to mention how pathetic it is listening to our fans versus all the other games I have watched. I know its because of the success the Wing's have had for 2 decades, and the fans not happy unless its a cup victory, but it really is pathetic how there is half as much energy in our crowds as all the other teams.
The Red Wing's are not built for the playoffs... They are built to get to the playoffs.
Unless the Wing's get their act together about adopting to the league the way it is now, I hope you are all prepared for a non-playoff team in a few years.
We need a 40 goal scorer on this team... Drastically.
We need an enforcer on this team... Drastically.
We need to model ourselves after the Mid-90's Wing's.
Time to move on to watching the Tiger's!
Ehhhh, no so fast my friend. I agree with 90 percent of your argument, but every playoff series has an ebb and flow that has a lot to do with who gets the "luck" and the "bounces." Sadly neither of those have been in our favor, but its not for a lack of trying. Just the way it goes.
Also, we do have pure goal scorers. Datsyuk is a pure goal scorer. The man can put the puck anywhere he wants, and often does. We have players who can score. Tonight's issue, to me, was more about players over-thinking their scoring chances more than just making plays and letting the chips fall where they may. We are behind the 8 ball and our team struggles with that, for sure.
So the solution is to play like garbage to get equally lucky garbage goals....By jov I think we've got it!
We have no emotion in our play. It's our guys don't really want it. The aren't into playing, the crowd was lax at best. Ugh just no emotion.
Not much needs to be said except this offseason should be interesting...better be interesting...and as far as doubting on friday...i am...I have been let down by this team waaaay too much in playoffs as of late...things need to change,...people need to go...I know you guys at NOHS are saying E-52 has been doing okay lately, but I think we need to trade him for shit, and get the money back on our cap space and find a guy that will play physical...we need A. Solid defender that uses size B.possible new coach C. Back up goalie D.Goal scorer...D being one of the most important...we need someone that can consistantly score...it is nice having our team share the load, but we need someone that can come out and score...a lot...not Rick Nash...we need a goal scorer but one that can play with our team..not a one man show...
Feedback?? Please share
Look im as pissed as anybody, but I think it is ridiculous to say that we may need a new coach. Babcock can only do so much. The execution on the ice is just not there, compounded by the worst case of bad luck ive ever seen. Babcock is our guy. I wouldnt take any other coach in the NHL over him at the moment. Our roster definitely needs looked at, but coaching is not the issue.
@Buckeye_Wings_Fan @rsutton89 Why is Franzen still "skating" up on the top lines while Nyquist rots on Line 4? You might as well call up Sheahan for Line 4- he's bigger and would be more effective at checking. I have been building over the last couple years to the point where (pardon the cliche) I don't think the players are responding to Babcock anymore. He doesn't make sense to most people, and that is only cool if you are successful. These are the Wings. Dragging into the playoffs and choking SJS-style isn't success...
good deal bro...I have always loved detroit sports...not a huge fan of Pistons though, but on the same note...not a huge NBA fan to begin with...but yah the Reds are supposed to have a good team...hopefully they turn it around
Thankfully, baseball has 2 leagues. So I do root for the Tigers as well. FYI
@rsutton89 Hahahaha thanks. Im a Reds fan actually tho. I hate Cleveland sports. Reds have a chance for a great season, but so far they are doing a good job of screwing that up too.
@Buckeye_Wings_Fan @ThroatShot
Yea I feel ya...I love babs, he does stick up for us and speaks his mind for sure, but as @ThroatShot shot mentioned...maybe the players are not responding as well as they used too....And I am not saying he will be gone any time soon...I just wouldn't be surprised...we will have to see what they decide in the front office...but hey...I guess I will be cheering on the Tigers now...good luck to the Indians if they are your team @Buckeye_Wings_Fan lol
@ThroatShot @rsutton89 Not to mention, I see Babcock get just as frustrated and pissed during games as we are. He doesnt like what he sees on the ice, and he knows we have been playing far below what is expected of our team. He has changed up lines, he has criticized officiating, he has stood up to the league's inaction, he has gotten an injury filled roster back to the playoffs for a 21st straight year. I dunno what else he can do. The owness is on the players now.
Well, I guess im just on an island then when I say that I fully support Babcock. I had no idea so many people thought he was the problem. The guy won us a cup, after coaches like Dave Lewis brought us down a dark path, and he is a proven NHL coach with an amazing track record. If there is a better coach out there right now for the Wings then please tell me who, and what makes them more qualified. I firmly believe Babcock is not the problem with our playoff decline over the past 3 years. There is only so much he can do, with the players he has, motivated or unmotivated, as they may be.
I know i know...babcock is great...but if new players do not make the difference we need, we may need to resort to that because he doesnt seem to be making the changes that might need to be made...granted this does look like a player level instead of coaching problem...first choice for me is def offense, and d improvements...possible back up goalie pick up, but guess we will see...this offseason will be interesting
I feel ya man...all we can do is wait and see what happens this offseason...i agree ...we need grinders that want to win every night and a d man that will back our players up...i love tuzzi doing it, but i want a young guy that doesnt give a fuck and one that is ready to throw down and can actually break a face...abby has the will and all that, but we really need a fighter but one with a skill
Well that comes down to Holland ultimately. He makes the player changes from year to year. We need a line of grinders. That was our key to success in the 4 cups Ive been alive to see, and that has been our downfall since our last cup in 2008. Season isnt over yet...I hope
@rsutton89 I see only a few Wings as off-limits- Jimmah, Pav, Filpulla, Smith, Nyquist, and Helm in my opinion. Everyone else should be up for sale. I, sadly, must say I would also like to see Hudler resigned.
Priorities? Grit and strength. Sniper(s). Add lots of grit and 1-2 legit goal scorers. Obviously, we need to do something to help in the D zone as well with the possibility of losing two good ones. I really, really, really hate to say it, but everything I just said sounds like a rebuild.
Replace Babcock with ________. idk who. Maybe Lidstrom or Chelios lol.
@ThroatShot @rsutton89 I think Z and Kronner should be off limits as well. We need another Maltby type player that yaps at people and gets them off their game. It should be Abby, but he doesn't seem to do it as well. I remember a time when you could piss off Weber and almost guarantee he would take a penalty. Nobody seems to be taking him off his game.
you are right...we will be rebuilding...sad to say...we used to be reloading, but ...Lidstrom will prolly be gone...as well as stuart...so...i agree...we need to pick up D guys with our money...not to mention we need to get that money back from ericcsson hes not worth that cost...I still do not know why we payed that much in the first place but...ehh ...and idk I would love to Lidstrom as a coach and dont count that out haha...it may happen after he gets family time in and misses hockey
@rsutton89 It's interesting how the Wings PP was suck during the regular season and now it seems that's the only way we can score. I think E-52 has played much better this year than last. I think it was just an overall lack of effort by just about everybody. Remember in 2008 (?) when both Kronwall AND Stuart were nailing people left and right? Stuart barely hits people anymore. That would be a huge intimidation factor right there. I remember they both used to talk about how much fun it was to just lay one out on people. Maybe they are scared of doing too much hitting and getting suspensions or maybe players are more aware of them on the ice. I would say we definitely need some better defense. It was better in the regular season than now in the playoffs. Maybe just laziness and the Preds are creating better scoring opportunities as a result. It's hard for me to imagine that Babcock is the wrong man for the job. How can the Preds have Trotz for so long but the Wings can't have Babcock for less? I think the goaltender situation is fine. Next year we will have Joey Mac as our backup. The only reason it's Conklin now is because Joey is injured. Goal scorer...usually I am a fan of Franzen, knowing that he plays poorly in the regular season because he hates it and then is a beast in the playoffs. But what happened? Is he tired of the playoffs now too? I know he was injured last year, but what is his excuse this year? Maybe I am just too frustrated to think straight right now.
that seems to be my problem...trying to think of ways to fix things, but idk ....franzen is not a goal scorer like he was supposed to be...he goes on streaks, but not the guy we need...and yes but with Quincey's signing, I can almost guarantee that Stuart will be gone next season...woiifnder who will replace him...and I know...I love Babcock, but ya never know...I would hate to see him go, but maybe we need a new face there...if there is a good backup goalie on the market i think we should nab him..if Jmac is our backup itd be okay, but howard needs to be more consistent...idk what to think right now...
seeing how well he has done with that one team in the desert, couldn't hurt trying him out...much as i love babcock...i think this year is the year to try new coaches and seems to be working...offseason will be coach d guy and scorer...i hope
