Detroit vs Columbus at the Big House. The Blue Jackets aren't exactly our biggest rival, but they could be up there in no time. All we need is a hockey game between Detroit and Columbus at either Michigan Stadium or the shoe. I give the nod to Michigan Stadium because the NHL would also have a shot at the attendance record for a hockey game which was previously set... at Michigan Stadium. The only down side would be the color mismatch. Cheering for a team in red at the Big House would be strange, but we'd get over it.
This would also convert some casual fans who don't watch hockey but are rabid fans of either the Wolverines or Buckeyes. In 2009, the NHL embraced baseball traditions during the Winter Classic in order to appeal to baseball fans who may have been watching. They had players shooting pucks (or trying to) through the uprights at Heinz Field. A game at the Big House could feature Desmond Howard and Kirk Herbstreit giving useless pregame predictions based solely on their own bias. Whoever is coaching in Columbus at the time could wear a sweater vest. This stuff is so obvious!
But no. Another game in Pennsylvania. What are your suggestions for the 2013 Winter Classic?
Did anyone else notice that it's being held on the 2nd this year? Kind of breaks my tradition of recovering from the previous nights inhibitions watching hockey.
I'm a big fan of Wings/Avs or Wings/Canadiens. Every year when Montreal plays in Detroit the stands are half full of Canadien's fans. Lots of energy for the fans and the players when those teams get matched up.
@ajp28 Ooooo. Wings/ Habs would be fun! They are the biggest reason I would love to see us move east. Even though it's not gonna happen. That would be a great rivalry if we played them 4-5 times a year plus the playoffs. Talk about oozing history and class.
Let's re-ignite the Red Wings/Avalanche rivalry for the 2013 Winter Classic.
Besides...Colorado's team name just screams Winter Classic. It could potentially be played in either Denver or Detroit (or Ann Arbor) since both places see plenty of wintery conditions!
Kings, Ducks at the Coliseum... only because then i would have a chance to attend. once went to a Dodgers, Red Sox pre season game there with 130.000 people...
I'd prefer it at Ohio Stadium, but I've been arguing for this game since the first Winter Classic was announced. It seems too obvious that it would have to happen either in Columbus or Ann Arbor(is a whore) within the next few years.
@nickbarnhart Totally agree. Big House or Columbus(aka cheaterville). I'm not sure why this hasn't happened yet, but I bet that butthole of a commish has had this suggested a ton and is just being spiteful.
@nickbarnhart Yeah, wtf kind of decision is Cleveland for the OSU/UM game this year???
@moorecha Definitely at the Shoe. I'm not pimping out Crew Stadium or anything.
And the OSU/UM game I was all pumped to go when it was announced. I've been to the Big House at least 10 times so it's not a new experience for me getting spit at. Then they announced Cleveland, and I lost all interest in going.
@nickbarnhart I'm assuming you are talking about the Shoe right?
