The Wings were nothing but defiant.
Down three huge players. Down three games to none. They were defiant till the end.
Just one goal short.
They gave it all we could ask for. And I for one, respect the hell out of 'em for it.
Now quickly, a few things that weren't the reasons for the Wings' loss.
The refereeing was fine. Fair calls for most of the series, especially after game two and on.
In fact, the goaltending was the reason the Wings were even close. Howard was great and deserved much more praise than he was given. Niemi was solid and made the saves he should have, but was not the gamechanger the announcers made him out to be. Still a very solid performance at both ends of the ice.
Pierre and "Jonesy" were down on his balls the whole game, but he was no better than slighty above average. Pavalski, Clowe, Couture and Setoguchi were the reasons that the Sharks won. Some incredible efforts and players there. But not little Joe, not even close.
In the end, it was a great effort from Pavel, Zetterberg, Howard, Kronwall, Lidstrom, Helm and Stuart all series long. Other players chipped in at times, but we just needed a little more, just a little more often.
In the end, all we can do is say thanks for an incredible series and look forward to next season.
Still my favorite team. I wore Red and White today, that's for sure. Anyone have a sense of who will take the lead if "The Captain" calls it quits? Is one of the Euro Twins in the mix? Draper too far along?
I'll admit that I'm disappointed we didn't pull out the win, but it could have been worse. We could have been up 3-0 and lost the next 4. I was very happy with games 4, 5, and 6 and believed we could win game 7. I felt like Cleary was playing so well that he was only one strange bounce away from an ultimate goal and then he got knocked out. Maybe if not for that we could have won. Maybe if not for a lot of things, but keep in mind...Detroit is now one of 8 teams to ever come back from down 0-3. That's pretty good company--even if we did end up losing.
We'll get 'em next year! I'm proud of always being able to count on my team making the playoffs and actually a chance to win. Glad I wasn't born an Islanders fan.
The one good thing about a long summer is an earlier draft pick.
Anyone know if San Jose will do some imploding after this year like Chicago last year? I'm not very familiar with the contracts of their players.
@Lauren H just some irony for you, not 100% but I think that elite company is only 6 other teams... One team did it twice in the same year, and here comes the irony, it was , the islanders... As for the sharks again not 100% but I believe other than melot, and niemi, not a single player is signed through 2012-2013, so major changes could be in their future or their head office is run by Myans.... Either or LGRW!!!!
Were it not for their final efforts I would feel nothing but betrayed. The Sharks cheated desitny and I hope the Canucks make them pay. Thats me, I'm checked out. Awful decision not to play Modano, just plain stupid. And that giveaway by Z was retarded. But that's hockey. I hope Thornton chokes on his breakfast tomorrow.
I'm not going to pretend to be grateful, we should have never gone 0-3, but to come so close and lose by so little breaks my heart. I have never come so close to crying in public than I did tonight.
@Reddy Honestly, as the final few seconds were ticking down, my heart sank and like you I came close to crying. I didn't mean to give the impression that I wasn't hurt or frustrated. I definitely was, but there's nothing I could have done about it. Why stay upset about something I had no control over. What's done is done. Instead of dwelling on the negative, I focused on the positive to help me cope with what happened. Even today, it still stings a bit.
It should have been different. I feel cheated a little but I still love my Red Wings and am proud of their effort through and through. @Reddy
It wasn't the outcome we hoped for, but it was a hell of a ride. There were some great milestones this season. Lidstrom's first career hat trick, Datsyuk getting the Gordie Howe hat trick, Franzen's five goal game and Ozzie getting his 400th win. As a fan, I'm glad I got to see those moments. Thanks to the creators of this blog. Reading the posts and comments gave me hours of entertainment, and the photoshop posters cracked me up. It's gonna be a long summer...I guess I'll get farther planning my upcoming wedding in October now that I don't have hockey to distract me...
@Scum Bum I saw a -3 and 5 or 6 assists....good but not dominate...nothing like the versus c*mswap that was going on last night.
That was brutal. Just brutal. Some tenacious hockey. Heart attack inducing hockey. What a series. Can't fault our heart. No quit in the squad. I'm just not happy getting bounced in back to back years by McLellan. Traitor.
no one on this blog and no one wearing the winged wheel gave up on the series, no matter the score or the time.
proud of all involved.
I am sorry Twig... I gave up at about game two, even before the loss.
I think Bab's screwed us in this series by trying to play cripple and that dumbass Hudler. Hudler has become the equivalent of Crosby to Bettman for Bab's. Seriously tell me that you would want those two over Modano, Draper, or Miller.
I guess I am one of the only die hard Wing's fans expecting a downfall which takes us out of the playoffs in the next 5 years. We have weak ass draft picks and mediocrity coming up. Our benefit is that we have veterans that make a team better than they would be through leadership. With Lidstrom, Draper, and Modano likely leaving this year you have a serious gap that needs to be filled.
Looking ahead, my opinion would be to let Miller go. Maybe Eaves too. Try signing Mo again to a 1- 1.5 mil deal (the guy is damn good), and try to sign Lid's at 2-3 mil. Sure, this is an insult to Lid's if he takes it that way but I would honestly hope at this point in his career that he desides it is time to take one for the team for a couple years to win the cup.
After this you could sign a power forward like we need. Honestly, if we had been able to sign Hossa again we would have a cup last year or this year.
I know, I am so cotroversial.
I couldn't agree more. I would have benched hudler for most of the season. The finale of this season was a disgrace to everyone in the organization. Not playing Modano tonight was probably one of the dumbest decisions I have ever seen in professional sports. @tplamon
@Reddy @tplamon @BLOOD RED Show me where I once said the PP was good? It was appalling. I simply disagree with you on which way they would have better executed. The dump and chase was the right play but you must have all three forwards on the puck right away. The Wing's tried to put one guy on the puck and two as support.
I also saw them try to enter the zone skating and passing but SJ was stacking the blue line, so I don't feel any amount of passing would have worked to get in the zone.
If you want to be hostile about this its your right, but a simple disagreement on method doesn't seem like something to get butt hurt about.
2011-12 season here we come.
@tplamon I respectfully disagree because what you said is exactly what we were trying... Who on earth can stop Lidstrom from taking the red line and either gaining the zone, or dropping 20 feet to Pav and stopping short. Pav gets it with time and space and an easy entry.... Even if he has to dump it, he's already drawn the extra pk man and we get it back easy... I saw SJ doing nothing to prevent us from doing this but we NEVER FUCKING RAN THAT PLAY!!!!!!! and we got denied the zone time and time again by playing dump and chase and creating 50/50's, or lateral passes that either didn't conect or got picked off. What game were you watching?
@BLOOD RED It also took how many years for teams to figure out how to defend is? A lot, we were lucky. San Jose was a much bigger team. They used size to force the Wing's outside and squeeze them off the puck. I say it was great play on SJ's part. I am sorry. That is how I feel. the Wing's could have overcome it by doing opposite of what you are saying. Which would be to advance to the red line, drop to the D-man, he dumps and 3 forwards go directly to the puck. This is completely opposite of how the Wing's normally play and again, I blame Bab's for not making that correction. But I don't think he ever set up a PP like that all year so how the hell do you change that quick?
@tplamon You're right. you dont wanna relie on the pp to win but we lost by one goal and went 0-13 on the pp to close out the series. Are you seriously gonna say that wasnt the main factor. SJ had no pp trouble, What a surprise they won.
@tplamon Again... How many times did they even try that sort of entry? NOT FUCKING ONCE!!! Did you watch the games? cause if you did and you've watched the redwings before then you would have noticed that signature aspect of the pp was completely absent
Ya know... The Mo thing peeves me but we shoulda won the game anyway. I can't stress enough how pissed I am at our pp. How many times have you heard " Lidstrom carries past center. Drops to Datsyuk who stick handles over the line. Datsyuk into the corner, kicks it out to Kronwall. SHOOTS!! Tipped by Holmstrom who SCORES!!!!!!! A powerplay goal for Detroit". WTF BABS??? @tplamon
@BLOOD RED The PP should not be required to win a game. Sure it was weak. But it wasn't the entry that was weak. They got in the zone fine and one of our players picked it up. But when pressured they would make a shitty pass and it was gone. You know who made the most shitty passes on the PP that I saw... Hudler.
Exactly what we were saying. This guy should have been sitting the whole series not Mo who worked his ass off and played VERY well the two games he was in.
Even so... you are screaming at Bab's for the PP and we are screaming at Bab's for terrible calls on the roster.
Again, my point from the begining is that I was putting most of the blame on Bab's for this. For me it was complete mismanagement of the line up.
@Reddy Exactly... Enough said.
@tplamon I agree about Hossa but Kenny always finds a way to bring in a big free agent or two and we always have a river of young( low draft pick ) talent coming out of Grand rapids.... The same things were said in the middle of the last decade and look how it turned out. We spend more than double the amount of money of any other team on scouting for a good reason. Andres Erricson=my hero. Long live the REDWINGS DYNASTY!!! And Babs, I forgive you... And Thank you boys!!!
@tplamon Meant Haken Erricson
@tplamon Oh contrare monfrare( I know thats not right). First of all, in a cap system, scouting is paramount... We are the best, Period. And as long as we keep maintaining our place in the top 3 or 4 in the conference, then why wouldn't we pick up a good to great 38 year old every couple years. These kids are just a media trick to get more fans. Bottom line, you make it seem like the Dynasty is over and I would ask you, What has changed??? Answer, Nothing. And when Kenny leaves Stevie comes back and the thunder rolls. Trust me They,ve got it all planned out..
@BLOOD RED I know that Kenny Holland is a genious but you can NOT do it forever. At some point you must have high picks in the draft to do anything worth while. That is unless you continue having success and people want to join your team. Detroit did that up until 2008 but now the NHL is different and your just not going to get that interest any longer.
Players would rather go to places with exciting young superstars. The age of the veterans is over in my opinion. I simply do not think that the Wings can survive by hanging on to legacy any longer.
@tplamon we need eaves.
well yeah, if the trade off was eaves for stamkos, sure, but that won't happen. eaves is a hard working guy who's good on the PK and chips in timely points.
@Twig Why? Get me a guy like Stamkos and we could dump Eaves like a cheap hooker. But I would prefer to dump Miller first anyway.
Actually Abby would be my first pick but he is locked at two years.
@tplamon Week ass draft picks???? Please tell me what number Datsyuk and Z went in the draft????
@tplamon yet no mention of dumping raffi or shitbox??? Very controversial indeed... And insult?? That's a kick in the groin.... An yeah... Lids we want you to get paid 3 to 4 million dollars less than Rafalski.... Come on...
I forgot to mention dumping the big rig.
I know Lid's is still better than Raffi but at what cost when considering ice time. Lid's is worth keeping, but in my opinion not above 4 mils a year...
I would keep Raffi at the same rate as Lids because I feel they are equal on ice presence.
The truth is that this team has not been getting it done in the post season. I have to say that I feel it is due to lack of young superstars. The teams winning the cup now days (minus the Wing's '08 have the young blood). Detroit doesn't have it.
Yes, in today's NHL I would prefer a young goal scoring superstar over a solid D-man. This last series cemented that ideology for me.
@Twig you were a big part of it all too my friend... Defiance. LGRW!
Thankyou, Detroit Red Wings. I'll always be proud to be a Wings fan.
Thankyou, NOHS. You guys have been my goto blog all season.
Next season's lineup should have a few changes. Keep us updated.
Putting that series in the top 3 for me... Amazing hockey, yeah they lost, sharks played well from the jump... Damn a win would have been nice, but that's life... This team seems due for a major overhaul... If just by contracts expiring, so I know I'll be checking back here everyday for news and insight... Hope to talk to everyone again soon... LGRW!!!!!!!!!!!
@D.M.N if i knew modano would be a healthy scratch, i would have pushed for a shutdown d-man.
don't wanna question babbles too much, but that decision got me.
@D.M.N I think really just a few changes...
@moorecha may have been wrong choice of words... I'd lump resignings in there... I'd love to see some more size come in... Not sure who for who though...
