From the Free Press:
The Wings have offered a two-year deal to unrestricted free agent forward Todd Bertuzzi. They also have extended qualifying offers to all five of their restricted free agents: forwards Patrick Eaves, Drew Miller, Justin Abdelkader and Darren Helm and defenseman Derek Meech. There have been some preliminary talks with the agents for Eaves and Miller. Eaves, Miller and Meech all have arbitration rights.
Two year deal, Bert...sign it. That's the reason he bolted for Anaheim after the 2007 season, because they offered two years and we only offered one. It's looking like Ken Holland is trying to make up for past mistakes by getting his in-house business done ahead of time. Last year, we all sat around and waited for the Hossa news only to find ourselves caught in a bit of a fire sale with players like Sammy leaving for Vancouver and Hudler bolting for the KHL.
Kenny seems determined NOT to get caught with his pants down. Perhaps Yzerman leaving for Tampa is putting some outside pressure on him to get things done now rather than later, as guys like Meech, Eaves, and Miller could possibly be lured into following Yzerman as young players who might want in on the ground floor of Stevie's Florida project.
But the players aren't the only ones getting contracts in Detroit:
The Red Wings expect to announce long-term extensions for general manager Ken Holland and assistant general manager Jim Nill sometime this week.
"It's pretty imminent. We just have to clean up a little bit of language in one of the contracts, and then it should be done. When it's long-term contracts, you want it to be right for both sides."--Jimmy Devellano
We're signing everyone before July 1st this year...and people are already claiming that we have the inside track in the Central Division.
Ah...to be favored again. Is it October yet?
