Bettor.com blogger Elvis Mark posted 8 of the best players in the NHL currently on the wrong side of 35. I bet you can guess who one of them is...
Nicklas Lidstrom: Lidstrom is 40 years old and also managed 40 assists last season. He is a key distributor for the Detroit Red Wings and has consistently been one of the best passing defenders in all of hockey. Lidstrom will be returning to Detroit for at least another season and now that the roster is healthy, Lidstrom will be a part of a very serious contender.
Also making the list:
- Marty Brodeur - 38
- Chris Pronger - 35
- Martin St. Louis - 35
- Daniel Alfredsson - 38
- Andrew Brunette - 37
- Ray Whitney - 38
- Dwayne Roloson - 40
So is Lidstrom the best out of all these players listed? A couple of years ago I wouldn't have hesitated to say "yes" about every single one of them...aside for perhaps Brodeur when he was 35. But after watching what Chris Pronger helped the Flyers do, and Lidstrom having a bit of an off year...is he still considered the best of the over 35 club?
I know, I know...it's not really fair to judge him against guys that are 5 years younger. Let's just hope that Lidas has a bounce back season. A full healthy season for him would be a good start. Having healthy teammates on the roster will also help.
