About N.O.H.S.

The Nightmare on Helm Street is an unofficial blog overwhelmingly dedicated to the Detroit Red Wings and the destruction of their enemies. Drew started a non-partisan blog in 2008 which failed miserably and he eventually created N.O.H.S. on the scorched Earth thereafter in July 2009. Chris was added as an author three months later. Both are washed up college hockey players, except Chris is a stupid goalie.

Anyone who hasn't heard of The Obstructed View, you need to click that link and check it out.  This week, with the Chief from A2Y, Malik from Snapshots, and Jessie from Bingo Bango (links are in the Wings Blogroll) join Chris from Motown Wings.  They discuss things from goaltending, to the Herm to Hockeytown movement, and just before the hour mark of the broadcast, the Chief makes a strong suggestion: Don't.Boo.Hossa.

"We have an oppurtunity to really separate ourselves from the d***head Penguins fan and not boo him with every touch of the puck"

hossa4

Boo the Blackhawks?  Yes.  Boo Marian Hossa?  Chief says 'No'.  We all pretty much knew it was going to be Franzen or Hossa, and Ken Holland made that choice.

So do we treat Hossa as ingraciously as we have Sergei Federov over the years?

I think he looks goofy has hell in a hawks uniform. Is that just me?

Put me in the "no boo" camp. Here's why:

1. Everyone knew going in it was a one-year thing.

2. He made the choice to come to Detroit for competitive reasons instead of taking a long-term deal, which a lot of guys wouldn't have done. Then he came out and talked to the media after Game 7. After those moves, I can't hate him, ever.

3. Yes, we should act better than Pens fans. They still boo him even though he never chose to be there and actually scored for them in the playoffs.

Agreed, Hossa shouldn't be booed in Detroit. Everyone knew it was a one year deal and the fact that Hossa was even open to talking new contract is a credit to his character. He took a similar deal that Detroit offered, but it remains to be seen how much that would have handcuffed Detroit financially.

He signed in Chicago, so what. I called for him to get laid out over on my blog, but that doesn't mean I truly hate him. As a person, he's fine. As a Blackhawk, he's no better than the rest of them. I want Hossa to get hit so I know the Wings aren't just going to ignore him because they're buds. I want him to get hit because he's a Blackhawk, and every Hawk should feel the wrath of Stuart/Kronwall/Abdelkader/etc.

Not to boo. Not because I like him, but because I enjoy feeling superior to lame Pens/Hawks fans. (Yes, this is the least classy line of reasoning, but that's how I roll.)

I think Booing is more than appropriate. I think this is less about the fact that he did not sign with the Wings - as that was obvious to anyone who looked at the math as soon as Franzen was signed - and more about 1) the fact that he signed with a division rival, and 2) the fact that he did jack squat during the playoffs.

We paid the guy to perform. He didn't. Boo away if you'd like.

Though, that's only to say that it's appropriate. I'm not saying it's wise. Personally, I'd refrain just because he seemed to really react last year. Recall the regular season game where the Pens booed and Hossa lit them up.

No to booing because it's a douchy thing to do for all the reasons enumerated above, including being better than other fans.

If you wanted to boo Hossa's performance in the playoffs, you should have already done it. And he crippled our little brothers because he's not winning a Cup in his career. He had the scene for his conquest set on a platter and went limp dick. Done.

"but it remains to be seen how much that would have handcuffed Detroit financially."

No. It doesn't really 'remain to be seen" at all.

Hossa got an average of $5.2M. If he was willing to take $3.5M per season (yeah right) we wouldn't have been able to sign Bert, Willy and Eaves. No big loss, you might say, except that if we signed Hossa to a contract even that low, we wouldn't have been able to afford to dress 20 players, much less have a 23-player active roster.

The only way we could have realistically signed Hossa would be to either sign him to Bertuzzi/Williams money or to unload at least on of our mid-sized contracts (ie. say goodbye to Kronwall, Stuart, Filpulla or Cleary...or more likely some combination of at least two of them) and we'd still likely be bumping up against the cap.

I would say there is no reason to boo him. Hossa's decision was strictly business. We all knew it was a 1-year deal. As mentioned by those smarter and more eloquent than me, signing him would have f***ed our salary cap numbers. I don't like the idea of sinking most of our money into a very small number of players. Every game would be like "Here are your Detroit Red Wings, Hossa, Zetterberg, Franzen, Datsyuk, Lidstrom, Rafalski, and . . . a bunch of Griffins and Walleyes." Imagine the injury bug hitting that kind of team. No depth = mucho losses.

Well said, Twig. We should definitely run the hell out of him. Mr. Brad Stuart, I hope you are reading this.
